[MBZ] Hey Curt….VW BioDiesel Question

2022-04-28 Thread Bob Rentfro via Mercedes
I’m over here in San Diego getting my cancer treatments (19 out of 28 complete)
and diesel is $6.19 a gallon. A few gas stations offer biodiesel for $6.09 a
gallon, but in typical California fashion they label it as a renewable energy
source somehow. I haven’t been close enough to a sign to see the percentages of
biodiesel it actually is but if I try to save that $.10 a gallon, which seems
to be ridiculous when you’re spending this much money on a take a fuel, I
wonder if that would be unadvisable in my 2014 Passat TDI?
Having Driven 1707 miles since I left my home on April 3, I’m averaging 41
miles a gallon.

B5 unfortunately.
https://idpartsblog.com/2014/09/30/biodiesel-usage-guide/
I buy most of my TDI parts from ID Parts, they're in state for me and are nice
folks.

We did a trip to PA last weekend where Angie was taking a Tai-Chi instructor
class. My 2015 Jetta TDI returned 51.5 mpg on the trip down and back. Drove
from home to PA and back to CT, 630 miles, on one tank of fuel.

I’m not Curt and I’ve never owned a VW but I remember having a conversation

Another reason to own an older diesel which has no such restrictions!

Re: [MBZ] Hey Curt….VW BioDiesel Question

2022-04-28 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Not approved and restricted are not the same thing. In 2003 we'd be talking
about an ALH or AHU engine like my '89 Jetta. Those do just fine on bio diesel,
I ran quite a bit through my '98. If it weren't for the tin-worm I'd still be
driving that car, it's my favorite.

The next generation PD engines have "mixed" results apparently but up B80 seems
fine. This is the generation where pressures start to get serious. Angie's '05
Golf has the PD engine.

Then you get into the common rail engines, the issue here is the post injection
for emissions. Typical emissions getting in the way. I will say that my '15
Jetta makes no diesel smoke or smell ever. Angie's '05 generally makes a puff
of smoke when it first starts, that puff goes away quickly and there is no
smoke or smell after that.

Of course, it had a 20-gallon auxiliary fuel tank in the trunk! MPG was 23.5

In retrospect I wish I'd paid more attention to the fuel input when we stopped
but I'd just driven through NYC and was a little tired.

Google says the car has a 14.5 gallon tank and the car was reporting 30 miles
of range left when we finally refueled. Going through NYC with the low fuel
light on was a touch stressful. I should have fueled up before we left PA but I
wanted to see how far we could get on one tank, not my best plan.

Nice looking car, definitely one of the nicest I’ve seen in a long time.

Re: [MBZ] Hey Curt….VW BioDiesel Question

2022-04-28 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
You could add it to a partially filled tank. I've found that a relatively small
amount of veggie oil makes a huge difference in the sound of a diesel engine. I
haven't tried in my TDI but in a 240D a quart of veggie oil in a full (or
nearly full) tank of diesel would substantially quiet the engine and give that
veggie oil smell.

odometer rolled over - I wonder if it was more than ten years old when
they bought it and says EXEMPT in the mileage box on the title, or if
the instrument panel was replaced?

I would not have paid $31,000 for any car just because it has low mileage.

[MBZ] Missing engine cover

2022-04-28 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
I'm potentially interested in a 2014 E250 Bluetec sedan at a small
dealership. For SWMBO. Very nice car, has the features that we want and
it's a pretty color, but it's missing its engine cover. I looked at the
carfax report and it was last serviced at a Florida dealership. They claim
not to have it. The selling dealer is not willing to purchase a new cover
for $300.

My question is, under what circumstances should this car be considered for
purchase? In other respects it looks presentable and has decent service
history. But how do you lose an engine cover? And what is the harm done
driving around without one?

Re: [MBZ] Missing engine cover

2022-04-28 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
I think the engine cover is mostly cosmetic, but don't take my word for it.

Hard to imagine a dealership service tech forgetting to replace it, but I
suppose it's possible. Also possible is that it was serviced somewhere else
that does not report to Carfax, and they left it off. Or the prior owner pulled
it off and sold it on eBay before he traded in the car.

If you think the price + $300 to replace the cover is still fair, buy it. But
you might want to have a prepurchase inspection done by an MB dealer. What
other parts might be missing?
