Not this actual car, but this model or something very close. Had some
aftermarket wheels but they looked good. Otherwise looked nicely restored or
well preserved.

I'm sure it's finicky to own but it was a beautiful little car.

The boat is just the beginning. Once you have the boat, you either need
a boathouse to keep it in or a storage building at home to keep it in on
the trailer. Storing it on the trailer is likely not recommended for a
wooden boat as they need to soak up a bit of water or they will leak.
You also need a tow vehicle and the name of a boat builder/restorer to
call upon whenever it appears to need TLC.

There was a fairly decent boat for sale of a similar vintage out at our
lake last summer. It was a Lyman so the hull was painted white but it
had the mahogany front deck and side trim, dog house, etc. I could have
had it for around $10K but I do not have a boat house to keep it in or I
might have been tempted.

Interestingly enough, it had lived its whole life in our bay within
sight of our dock. It belonged originally to  some folks who had a big
triple stall boathouse with living quarters above. Those are not allowed
these days but grandfathered ones still exist. The boat along with the
property was inherited by their son. Unfortunately, he died a couple of
years ago at about age 80. The boat was acquired by some folks in town
who used it a bit but are now seeking to sell it. They aren't getting
any younger either. They would be in their early to mid 70's.

The boathouse was falling into disrepair and was torn down too. A sad
state of affairs.

Re: [MBZ] Floating temptress

2022-05-16 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
As it was explained to me by a CC owner at Lake Tahoe some years back, a “true”
CC needs a “soak” for a while before it can be put in the water for actual use.
This is apparently a clearly defined process where you put the hull in the
water for a specified period of time that’s based on how long it’s been out and
the relative humidity of the storage climate, if I recall correctly. I really
wasn’t paying close attention as I was busy ogling the boat.

From what I could see (admittedly fairly cursory lookover) it was a few
hull and deck boards, some minor stuff in the passenger area that was a
little ratty.  So not really boatbuilding kind of detail but I get your
point.  The mahogany would be spendy but not too hard to shape and
replace.  And as pointed out the hull boards all appeared to be shrunk
from drying out, I guess some caulk and stuff would need to added if
that is how it is done, at least to keep it afloat until it expanded
enough to seal the joints.  Did not seem to have any major structural
issues or rot.

Re: [MBZ] Opinions on window tint

2022-05-16 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I need to learn a little about tinting for our gym. Its in a converted space in
what was an old bank. I don't know how old the building is, I'd guess late
1800s or early 1900s. I suspect there isn't much insulation and it's tough to
keep it cool in the summer. Shades over the windows helped but I bet a moderate
tint would help too.

The 3M crystal stuff is expensive and tint guy said the other brands may be
better for less money.

I have dark tint in the 123 wagon, darker in Rear than front. All modern
SUVs run it. Looks fine. Need to do the windshield.

Rear window on a 126 takes an experienced hand to shrink the film in
corners due to compound curve. And be sure not to break the 3rd brake
light. The whole thing just tilts up and out- dont mess with the cover.

Dropped a bluetooth kenwood and some speakers in also with subwoofers in
doors. Sacrelige but totally functional.

Red/red is gorgeous.  And an interesting history!  Doesn't look like a
Brit plate, i wonder where it came from.

I’m the early 2000s the previous owner was incarcerated and the car was
put into long term storage until 2016 when he was a released and decided
to sell the car.

The beautiful Red Metallic paint was a respray from sometime in the 90s
where the color was changed from the original Black and the vinyl top
was added. [ I think original black/red, loose the vinyl, would be best]

Fans?  Car looks fairly decent for the year and miles

I do have a new motor that has not been put in yet with it as well.

Yeah, I wasn’t impressed with some of the photos of the hull “restoration”.
Looked pretty rough.

For the kind of money these things command, I can’t imaging scrimping on

Karl,

While the ship has sailed on your W126, for anyone considering aftermarket
audio in the W126 and similar vintage cars, the Continental head units are
fantastic with modern features like Bluetooth and look period correct - even
more so than the Beckers, if you ask me. I’ve had several of them and always
been pleased, and they’re not terribly expensive, either.

Re: [MBZ] Opinions on window tint

I put the 3M clear on the 126, all windows. Huge reduction in interior heat
load through front and rear. It still runs r12 so it is like a refrigerator
now, but the car is black on black so had to do something.

[MBZ] Carfax?

2022-05-16 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
Anyone got access to CarFax or something other than Autocheck?

I ask because I’m trying to sort out the history on this 2008 ML550. Autocheck
shows it as a theft and total loss in 2013. The NICB shows it as clean and
clear. The seller says the title is clear.

I’m trying to figure out if Autocheck is wrong. I checked the Russian insurance
auction site, too, but nothing there.

Thanks,
