What is the purpose of a bumper? Unless it's more durable than the car
bodywork,
and/or cheaper, it's not a bumper at all.

[MBZ] Preaching to the Converted

2022-11-04 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes
As the Subject line says, I know I am preaching to the converted here,
but, I have to say that I continue to marvel at the quality of my old
Mercedes. It is 47 years old and has it's little idiosyncrasies, but it
is a darned good car. I won't be here to see what the current crop of
vehicles will be like in 47 years but I highly doubt they will match my
old car.

Some years I have driven it very little. This year, in the later summer
and through the fall, I have been driving it back and forth to my office
most days and I cannot help but be impressed. The diesel is of course a
bit noisy, but I sort of like listening to it. I don't have a radio in
the car at the moment but I likely wouldn't listen to it in any event.
It would mostly just be filler for the hole in the dash. It is no hot
rod but for the driving I have been doing, it is fine. I am in no risk
of being run down when I leave stop signs or traffic lights. It is a bit
disappointing that fuel has become more expensive than gasoline but the
car makes decent mileage so it is not that much of a penalty.

The car is about to be put away for the winter as snow is in the
forecast but such is life in the GWN. I need to get the winter tires
onto my truck this weekend.

The 2014-2016 E and GLK class bluetec German made sedan and SUV are
similarly durable. The interior wears like iron and the paint finish seems
to be impervious to The Elements.

Re: [MBZ] Preaching to the Converted

2022-11-04 Thread Karl Wittnebel via Mercedes
I think I have put about 120k on the wagon in daily driving since 2001. I
still drive it to work daily and on any longer trips to save gas over the
560. About an hour each way up the grapevine and back every Tuesday at 70+
mph. Violin lessons with the dog in back on Saturdays; bike rack on the
trailer hitch. It hauled my international canoe on the roof up and down the
Eastern Seaboard from Gananoque to Sarasota for eight years. Head gasket
started leaking in Rhode island on a trip and I ran the coolant low and
overheated it; this was 15 years ago; borrowed a glass coffee pot from a
Dunkin Donuts and filled it back up and kept driving for another 10 years
before replacing the head. So not without maintenance. But still feels
quite safe.

The tailgate guide rubber on the sides has finally died and I emailed
Latvia but no reponse yet.

Hole in the floor pan so no accelerator pedal.

New carpet last year; may go full leather interior this year.

Front w126 brakes. Master cylinder failed. Pedal is hard it should have a
126 booster probably.

Anyway I agree what else do you see on the road being used daily after 37
years? This car has saved me so many tickets. Except that time at night at
the Pentagon when the feds were tailgaiting me so I sped up and then they
pulled me over for speeding. Complete a-holes. Federal court. It was like
entrapment. Fortunately the federal prosecutors were more reasonable at the
Alexandria courthouse.

I keep thinking I should put a rebuilt motor in it while there are still
parts.

Still somewhat pricey especially as it's not a 4Matic?

Pricey, despite the mileage. That and it’s so…..drab. I don’t care for the
