You could try cutting an inch or so off an arm with a ball on it, and
bolt/rivet/ tack weld it over the arm with the missing ball.

I agree with Jim. I wouldn't think that it would be an intermittent
issue if it was the drive shaft out of balance due to improper alignment
after repair. One would think it would shake all the time if that were
the case. Might shake worse at some speeds but one would think it would
have vibration all the time due to imbalance.

I would look carefully for some other problem before going back to the
driveshaft.

Re: [MBZ] Todays CIS fun

2023-04-10 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes
I had an issue on the 450SL where the thermostatic idle air
valve had started to come apart. If you set the idle when cold
it was wrong when hot. If set when hot it wouldn't idle when cold.

The part was expensive, but I noticed when comparing photographs
that mine seemed to have an extra 'step' in the casting. That turned
out to be a friction-fit plug from assembly that had started to back out
under spring pressure. I used a hammer and a socket to set it back
flush again. After that the idle could be adjusted, and it worked both
when hot and cold.

My one experience with this problem, for sure, didn't have it being all that
intermittent. See:

http://formicapeak.com/~jimc/JSLdline.html

Short version: the alignment matters, down to the spline level. Some drivelines
are marked in the castings, some are not. It is possible to recover yourself,
cheaply, with some work.
