Thank you, Randy, for the re-orientation of our thoughts away from the
panacea of electric vehicles to reality.

The electricity has to come from somewhere. In Norway, the source is
constant-on hydroelectric. We do not have the same situation here in the
U.S. Here activists do not count hydroelectric as "green" (though it
really is) and are trying to remove it as a possible power source.

Saying, "Norway is going all electric vehicles and so should we," is an
apples to oranges comparison. Besides the U.S. is a physically much larger
country.

I think this is where things get sort of fuzzy between states.

In Florida, you can have a “salvage” title and register the vehicle and drive
it. If the car was “totaled”, it has to be inspected to get a “rebuilt” title.

My 1995 S500 coupe that came from Tarek had a salvage title.

Mrs. Dan’s SL500 had a rebuilt title.

Does the $5000 include what you paid for it at the salvage auction?
And by "salvage", do you mean "rebuilt", or is it up to the buyer to
make sure it passes inspection and retitle it?

Whatever this thing my daughter’s friends bought was a diesel, they got it
because it could supposedly tow some camping trailer they bought. It pretty
much died 15mi after they got it in Florida somewhere and there it sits while
they argue with the seller or a stealer or whoever was involved with selling it
and getting it sorted.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Norway's near-total adoption of electric vehicles

2023-05-09 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Apparently Norway's electricity is about $0.12/KWH all in, including supplier
charges. We're paying $0.16/KWH just for the electricity here in north central
MA. A year ago we were locked in at $0.10KWH...

If I bought from National Grid it'd be $0.24/KWH just for the electricity.

2023-05-09 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
Pretty much forever Texas has been on its own grid with I think one
interconnect in North Texas to some other grid. There was a huge amount of
installed wind generation in West Texas which was fine until one very frigid
New Year’s Day in like 09 or 10 the wind just died. No wind power which was a
very substantial fraction of supply at the time. Caused huge problems getting
units up and running on the holiday and very cold day.

.
In 2022, 80 percent of Norway's new car sales were electric, and it plans
to phase out gas-powered cars entirely in 2025. So far, "Norway's
experience suggests that electric vehicles bring benefits without the dire
consequences predicted by some critics
,"
the *Times* reports.

Oslo's air is noticeably cleaner — and much quieter — and its greenhouse
gas emissions have dropped 30 percent since 2009 with no big uptick in
unemployment at gas stations or auto mechanics, or significant strain on
the electrical grid. Norway has put a lot of work into making the
transition, starting with enacting policies to promote electric vehicles in
the 1990s and, more recently, subsidizing the rollout of fast-charge
stations throughout the country.
The combination of tax breaks for EV owners and readily available charging
stations "took away all the friction factors," Volvo Cars CEO Jim Rowan
told the *Times*. But the U.S. and other countries can learn from Norway's
challenges with electric cars, not just its successes. That includes
figuring out the optimal number and locations for charging stations, and
dealing with the frustrations of new EV drivers learning to plug in their
cars. "Sometimes we have to give them a coffee to calm down," Marit
Bergsland, who works at a Circle K north of Oslo with more charging
stations than gas pumps, tells the *Times*. "
