Can Dual be added to the list of formerly respected names that went

name means nothing?

2023-05-26 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
I know Dual from turntables back in the day (I think.) I had no idea they made
car audio.

My first cassette deck was a side loading hang under the dash with one of those
removable slide mount Radio Shack models. Worked great in my 1970 Ford Maverick
two door.

First cassette I ever owned was Electric Light Orchestra - Face the Music.

No, the Cats were beside the head in the engine compartment in '75 and '76.
They cooked everything there. The solution is to get exhaust manifolds from
another model year and the associated front section of the exhaust pipe.

Emissions weren’t really bad until around 1974, which is probably peak
emissions junk on cars from my recollection. Manufacturers had some time to put
stuff on the cars, and form about 1970 to 1972-3, from what I’ve seen Mercedes
dealt with it on gassers by playing games with timing and that’s about it. It
wasn’t until 1974 and later where they got all crazy with cadillac converters.

2023-05-26 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
I owned one just like it, even the same color.
I took it in on a trade deal, about 2 weeks before the great oil embargo by
OPEC, when gas prices skyrocketed to never before seen levels... and the
454 engine that powered the land yacht, if you were careful, got a whopping
4 miles per gallon..
After trying to sell it for over 8 months.. I finally found a buyer with
$300 cash and had the happy moment of watching it drive away..
Another life experience that won't be forgotten... or repeated..

It's not that simple. The '76, for example, still has the manual HVAC system.
That's not bad. It also has first-year CIS fuel injection, which is simple and
reliable,
and not particularly a source of fire. I submit that the _only_ bad thing about
it is the underhood cats.

59 Fleetwood, probably had not a 454 but a similar sized Cadillac engine
(Cadillac always made their own) but at least the Eldorado of the same year had
a triple 2 barrel carb setup. If you could keep it tuned properly it got 17-18
mpg or better on the highway and would still rocket that lead sled up to
terrifying speeds for the four wheel drum brakes.

Incredibly ugly cars.

A heavy foot, yeah, single digit mileage.

Drove like a log wagon too.

55 MPH may have worked in the densely populated east, however in the
western states where distance is measured not in miles but hours from point
to point, it was a total failure.
Truck freight, where drivers are paid on miles driven and tons delivered,
took a huge pay cut, over "hauling the freight" at 75 MPH..
But, to those who do not agree... you are of course right..

My former 1964 Fleetwood 60 Special with a 390 and a THM “Jetaway 200” would
get in the mid to upper teens if you drove like an egg was under your foot.
Stomp it and just watch the gas gauge go down…

I had to chuckle! Mrs. Dan and I like to watch Perry Mason, and the other night
I was watching this guy drive a 1960s era car off a car lot, and you could just
see the body swaying all over the place, like it was on a cloud.

2023-05-26 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
I was not onld enough to really be paying attention to the justifications at
the time of the change, but what I do recall was 55MPH being about saving fuel
due to supply limits, not for environmental reasons. Those were also the days
where we wore coats in class during the winter because the schools kept the
heat turned down, and they had half the lights shut off, etc.

Re: [MBZ] OT - A True Land Yacht

2023-05-26 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes
Well, the point was to reduce fuel consumption, and lower speed does indeed do
that EXCEPT in some trucks with engine like screaming Jimmies where the RPM
doesn’t match up well.

Gotta remember that 70 mph speed limits were actually a fairly new thing in
1973, most two lanes were 65 or less (in most states the non-highway roads are
45).

Greatly reduced the fatality rate too, which has been climbing again, and is
getting as bad as it was per mile in the 1970 even with much, much safer cars.

The problem with raising speed limits is that increases result in exponential
increases in actual vehicle speed. Go from 55 to 60 and the average speed goes
to 65-70, raise it to 70 and the average speed goes to 85. raise the limit to
75 and the average speed goes up to 90, with drivers weaving in and out at much
higher speeds. Gotta be safe to drive 120 if the posted limit is 70, right?

I thought it looked to be in good shape and is really low miles, so I bid $1700

Well I guess it’s mine to deal with now. Being that it appears to be in great
