If it were boring beige the asking price would be half that.

Haha. The panels were installed and went live on July 31st of that year. I

My first Mercedes was a 71 250. It had the floor shifter. Red with ivory

Re: [MBZ] What the heck is the box hanging down in the passenger wheel well?

2023-09-15 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
Well I ended up with the thing and just got it home. It’s full of o2 bottles.
Apparently it was abandoned and ended up with a tow company. No key, DPF
appears to have been stolen but that’s just an excuse to delete and tune it out
if it runs. Have to get a key for it. I didn’t notice it was no key when I bid,
or else I wouldn’t have bid. Engine compartment is really clean so perhaps it
might turn out OK. Going to have to register it before I can get a key. At
which point I will be in it for way too much for it to be a gamble, but if the
gamble pays off it’s still a $5k vehicle I would imagine. There is a lot of
crap to clean out of it.

The guy next door is getting a new deck put on his house. I've been talking to
the builder, he's got solar on his house, said the payoff was 5 years.

He got it because he wanted to have a hot tub. Way oversized the system vs what
his house needed so it would accommodate the hot tub.

This summer I've been maniacal about keeping our electricity use down, we've
rarely gotten over 300Kwh per month yet our electric bills are higher than
they've ever been. I think a solar array is in our future. We only need a small
system and I don't want batteries...

My friend and Indy got stuck with a 2008 Prius (long story) so he decided to
just drive it as long as it would last. The last I talked to him it had over
400K on it with the original battery. He did say there was some sort of switch
related to the battery that he has replaced twice.

but if the necessary mechanical bits were up to the task, the state of the art

needed
a long development time in order to get all the bugs and quirks out, which I

1981 Coupe DeVille — with the V8-6-4.  It was GM’s very early attempt at cylinder deactivation. It was a great idea, but 1981 computer technology wasn’t up to the job.  It was only offered for 1 year.  It’s a great engine 368 Cu (6.0L) once the cylinder deactivation is turned off. This is accomplished by removing one wire. Technically the 368 was used in 1980 also without the cylinder deactivation. They also offered it in the Commercial chassis for a few more years. Donald H. Re: [MBZ] What every electric vehicle should have.

2023-09-15 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
Because of my vision issues I need to have blind spot assist/monitoring.
The only EVs that have this option are Mercedes B250E (2014-2017) and new
Leaf(ve)s, which are over $20k. Another factor is the mandatory 8
year/100k mile warranty on the battery for any EV. This argues for getting
a newer model or one with very low miles. Anything over 50k miles is
probably a nonstarter. "Electric Car Batteries are Warranted. The federal
government requires manufacturers to offer an eight-year/100,000-mile
warranty on all EV batteries. California does one better, mandating a
warranty of 10 years or 150,000 miles."

Re: [MBZ] E320 vs X5

2023-09-15 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes
I have had LED bulbs in the headlights of my 2013 F150 for several years
now. No problems so far and they are brighter. My mechanic son installed
them and for some reason looked at them again a while later and changed
them. At that point I ended up with high and low reversed until he
pulled them and put them back the way they were.
He did not have quite as good luck as I have. He had one of his LED
bulbs start to flicker and had to change it out. I think he got a new
one on warranty however.

On 15/09/2023 9:30 AM, Jim Cathey via Mercedes wrote:

The H7-equivalent LED lamps came yesterday. I installed them. First I
put an H7 in the spare headlamp to see what stock lighting looked
like, aimed around the yard at night. Surprisingly feeble, with a
rather short-height high-beam bar of light. But it works well on the
road. (I drove the car with the properly-installed H7 in it, the high
beams are indeed _much_ better this way. So, that had been a
problem ever since we got the car.) Then I put in an LED lamp.
Nothing exploded, and light came out. The pattern looked pretty
similar, but did seem perhaps 2x as bright, and was certainly
whiter. (Verging on blue-ish, but I don't think objectionably so.
And, these are high beams, so how they appear to oncoming drivers is
largely irrelevant, since they shouldn't be on in those conditions.)

Testing, such as it is, passed, I installed them in the car. That was
a bit fiddly, it looks like the bulbs are intended to go in multiple
ways, just in case they have to be rotated due to the unavoidable
directionality of the LEDs vs the reflectors. (Probably for use with
low beams, which I would not do. I also noticed that the city light
socket on the other side is also broken, and was wedged into place
with a wad of blue paper towel. Perhaps I should have ordered two
replacements?) I then took another test drive.

Yes, noticeably brighter. The light pattern seemed good while
driving, and turning high beams off made the lighting seem much
dimmer, which was not the case when I first started investigating.
We'll see how these hold up, I put the old H7s in the trunk just in
case the LEDs crap out on the road. There were no lamp-out
indications, which is good. (Some cars don't like some LED bulbs.)

Dang. If I could talk my wife out of her RAV4, that would make a great car.
But, that’s the rule. I can do what I want with my cars, just don’t mess with
hers.

Pre-facelift (91-95) are less desirable for a lot of reasons. They’re not bad
cars as long as you understand their shortcomings and how to maintain them.

Ideal W140 is the latest possible, but 1996 and later are all good. Very solid
and dependable cars.

From what I remember, for affordable EVs in 2016 it was pretty much the
Leaf (a comfortable and versatile limited range transportation
appliance) or the Spark (a pocket hot rod, much peppier and much less
refined than the Leaf).
I don't remember considering the MBZ and BMW offerings at that time,
probably due to sticker price concerns.

Re: [MBZ] E320 vs X5

2023-09-15 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes

Unfortunately it’s not about what people actually want or need, it’s more of a
political thing it seems.

I’m surprised the focus on EVs isn’t more on plug in hybrids. A plug in hybrid
would offer some short amount of electric power then switch over to hybrid
after. For many people using it commute it would use mostly electric, but it
offers to convenience of a “regular” car.
