[MBZ] I looked at the 91 300CE

2024-02-13 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
Body was straight with a couple of little dings, nothing particularly
noticeable. Clear coat shot but underlying paint was not too bad. Door cards
off, regulators gone. Seats were OK. Engine cranked but wouldn’t light off
today but tried to. Was running well a couple days ago, might be fuel pump or
filter or something. Forgot to look at gas level, maybe it’s low.

Guy (dad) who owned it was there, he had a W212 E350 and had messed with Benzes
a long time. We talked and kinda hit it off. I said it was a $500 car mostly
because coupé which he agreed with but he’s gonna try to get more. He has my
info. A cheap half decent 124 coupé would be kinda fun, attractive style.

Re: [MBZ] Rodbender?

2024-02-13 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
As I recall, there wasn’t anything “official”, but if a car came in under
warranty or close to it with the symptoms, it got replaced.

My former 350SDL got either a crate engine or short block, I couldn’t quite
tell exactly which from the VMI, around 90k.

Correct me on any of this as necessary, my memory is a bit sketchy on these as

Where are photos of the '79 450?

I'm convinced that boring/ordinary/common colors will depress the value of
W126 sedans, which are currently not particularly rare. The prices for
W126 coupes are less sensitive to color.

Holy cow! Sounds like the old Farmalls I used to drive as a kid were less
complicated to operate - even with implements!.

Do you folks all recall Chip Lamb, West of Sweden? He’s still around in the
high-line auction business, I believe, but not pushing Saabs.

The 350 SDL became known as the rodbender, I believe they started badging them

hearing that.

Not the regular clutch, there was a lever that engaged an overrunning clutch on

IIRC freewheel is what it was actually called.

Re: [MBZ] '83 Saab worth more than almost any Mercedes

2024-02-13 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Saab had the key switch between the seats for a long, long time. When I was
shopping TDIs back in 2013 I drove one. I think it was one of the GM made
models, probably early 2000s. It drove well, felt like a Saab but missed that
special something of Saabness.

Got it back to the little dealer and couldn't figure how to get the key out of
the ignition. I knew there was a trick but I hadn't driven a Saab in so long
that I couldn't remember what the trick might be and I'll be dammed if I was
going to go in and ask. I finally googled it. You need to put the transmission
in reverse...

One day I was riding with her, I might have been driving i don’t recall and hit

She was leaving the country within a couple months to go on a ramble and sold

reached no conclusions.

2024-02-13 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
Back at the U of Minn. in 1968 I carpooled with a fellow grad student in
his Saab. It required a qt. (liter?) of oil per 7 gallons of petrol. When
did that loveable quirk get obsoleted?

Those clear plastic fuse box lids are brilliant, and an example of lateral
thinking about the simplest things.

After the GM takeover, Saab engineers and management famously ignored
senior management mandates to "dance with the girl what brung ya", makings
thousands of changes to the common platform as well as the engine
management systems.
