It was about $50.oo US. It's made in China and I don't see any UL stamps on mine, but you could ask them I guess. Quality seems ok for the price. First I would hit the right side of the center console, on the carpet just right of the heater and radio. This is where the vacuum unit is, they are know for having bad solder joints thus hitting there you will often hear a click and then things start working in which case it will need resoldered. Additionally things are of course to check that the fuse is good, and you have good vacumm supply. Either one will cause vents to fail to defrost. I have had to replace the vacuum actuators and resolder the vacuum switch module on all my W126 over the years. Note if you remove the dash to replace vacuum actuators consider replacing the AC expansion valve as that on the SELs they are pain to replace with dash in place. One questionon a W126 WHERE is this "unit" located, and what's the best way to access it for troubleshooting? Re: [MBZ] OT '69 230 CARBS QUESTION
Zenith's are a little different from the other carbs, once you have the service manual for them ( 108 service manual) they are easy to set up correctly and perform perfectly. I have no problems with my 230 220S and 280S after I got the grasp of the jets and fuel flows from the carb diagram. synchronising them with a JCWhitney synchroniser is easy. mak Also, rebuilding the carbs is easy but make sure you pay attention to detail & set every adjustment absolutely exact. More carbs are screwed up by the owner mis-adjusting than from any other cause. More often than not, the float is set wrong.
Re: [MBZ] w 108 wheel bearing noise
Thanks Peter Absolutely agree that it is a bearing induced noise. Complete new bearings with supplied races were installed and I felt quite sure that the problem would be resolved . As I asked earlier -could it be the bearing at the output end of the diff. .connectiong to the drive shaft.? I have not replaced this one. Its isolating the area, but its impossible to do so while driving as the noise is omnidirectional. mak - Original Message - From: "Peter Frederick" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "Mercedes Discussion List" Sent: Monday, March 26, 2007 5:25 AM Subject: Re: [MBZ] w 108 wheel bearing noise Mak: Almost has to be a bearing or bearing housing, or something that only rubs when the weight of the car is on the wheels. The left rear bearing is OK, the right one is pure pain, I think I'm out of ideas -- look for something that moves and interferes with the wheels or tires when the car is sitting down. Also, did you change the bearing race in the hub when you did the front bearings? It's not always in the box with the bearing, sometimes you have to get it separately, and if it was bad, a new bearing will sound just as bad as the old one as the race is still bad and rough. Re: [MBZ] w 108 wheel bearing noise
I did change the rear wheel bearings along with the front ones. The Rear ones were not easy sailing. Engine mountings are o.k . The fan shroud is missing and I have not been able to source it as yet. On the stands the noise is not there and that is the surprising bit, Its a elusive grinding noise . regards mak - Original Message - From: "Peter Frederick" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "Mercedes Discussion List" Sent: Sunday, March 25, 2007 7:22 PM Subject: Re: [MBZ] w 108 wheel bearing noise It's unusual for a road gear related noise to stay at the same pitch and intensity with varying road speed and load, though. Are your engine mounts in good shape? Maybe the fan is vibrating the shroud or something (although that should change with engine speed). I forget, did you change the REAR axle bearings? Re: [MBZ] w 108 wheel bearing noise
Thanks Peter . I had overlooked that section, I will check the universal joint bearings . I did put all 4 wheels on the stands and 'ran' the car ,oddly the noise is not there when on the stands;on the road it starts around 30Kph and stays at the same pitch and level .It does sound like the gritty bad wheel bearings which I had replaced. regards mak From: "Peter Frederick" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "Mercedes Discussion List" Sent: Sunday, March 25, 2007 12:20 AM Subject: Re: [MBZ] w 108 wheel bearing noise The universal joint can go bad in those cars, it's user replaceable, I think, held in place with circlips. they can grind when dry. Diff noises change with load and speed -- a steady "tram car" sound that changes pitch with speed unrelated to engine speed is likely a diff noise, it will appear to be loudest in the front of the trunk/center of the rear seat area. [MBZ] w 108 wheel bearing noise
I have not been able to isolate the grating kind of noise my 1970 280S has . I have replaced the most suspected parts , drive shaft centre bearing and the wheel bearings -all four wheels, still the noise continues . Could it be the bearing at the dirrerential end near the drive shaft? All inputs will be appreciated. thanks mak
