Re: [MBZ] Howe's Diesel Treat

2011-01-01 Thread Dwight E. Giles, Jr
Howe's is RI product (Ocean State Oil) -along with quahogs-so it is highly
recommended and used here. I have used it for 8 years in both my 240D's and
my 300D 2.5t and I plan to use it in my new 300 CD that I brought home last
night. I use it from Nov-March about yeah much in each tank. It is a bit
spendy but the BP where I buy all my fuel gives me a discount or NAPA
sometimes has half gallons of it. I have used the white bottle stuff from
Wally's and have never really compared effects since it rarely gets very
gelling cold here, although it is cheaper than Howe's.

Neatsfoot works great-I first learned to use it on the leather sweep in the
vacuum wiper motor for my 1950 Dodge pickup. Softened the leather & stopped
vacuum leaks. I still had to let up on accel to get wipers to work as it was
direct manifold vacuum-that's it. Then I started using it in on leather
pumps for Coleman.

Okay - to prove your stuff, now you need to put up a link showing some
Mercedes rebuild.
I see your Coleman cap rebuild - nice 'cup-o-coffee production' video,
but we have not seen your cache of Mercedes videos - c'mon, let loose.
Oh, thanks for the great links.
I was gonna go to Ace to purchase new pump, but neatsfoot being in da

Yours is a W201, which is lighter but aerodynamically inferior. I suspect on

pure highway driving the W124 would win. IIRC, Mauri H was claiming around
38-41
mpg on his 400hp W124, but said getting on the throttle just once put a
noticeable dent in the average for the whole tank.

Sent Dory the '85 190D off to the scrapper yesterday. That car had some
fight left, even with no engine it REALLY didn't want to go.

The passenger side rear parking brake was stuck and I hadn't delt with it.
We had a Polaris Sportsman 500cc 4x4 to pull it on with. Normally this is no
problem, buddy Chuck has hauled many cars with that quad but it absolutely
could not move Dory. So we jacked it up and put a 2x12 under the wheel and
ski'd it out of my yard. Got as far as getting the rear wheels onto the ramp
and broke the winch cable. Tried pushing and got a little farther but when I
tried standing on the back of the quad to get some more traction the Polaris
slipped off the rear of the car and headed for the sky!
I was scared but buddy Chuck thought it was the funniest thing he'd see for
weeks...

Finally I pulled the offending wheel and slid the car up on the backing
plate...

Sad... Tonight we took RI Red, the '84 190D to Keene for dinner. The temp
seems to run high but it doesn't seem to have any rhyme or reason so I
wonder if its a red herring. The non-contact thermometer will tell all.

Hi Gang!! -
Thanks for the kind words!

Surgery went great! There was no infection so I didn't have to have a
spacer instead of a new knee fitted. I have done all the physical things
needed to go home but since they require I stay 24 hours after removing a
femoral block, I cannot go home until Sun AM. But that's still fast.

I get around really good with the walker - I'm sure home health/PT will go
equally well. I should be driving soon...

Thankfully the 300D is in good shape so that was something I didn't have to
worry about.

I see ya'll have been busy! I'm watching the W124 Rear Susp. rebuild and
saving all emails - it's something I'll have to do someday.

That E300 Don has sounds like a great deal! Would love to test drive one
someday - I'll bet the jump from Diesel is FUN!

Ya'll take care --

HI Dwight,

Technically it is a GMC truck, and the diesel engine is made by Isuzu. I
drove it around the parking lot a bit today what a great sound!
Klatta klatta on steroids. :)

I am on vacation for the next two weeks, so I don't expect too many
donations for a bit. Perhaps I will receive a Mercedes by ChowdahFest
time and I will leave it to you to ensure that we get a good turnout of
High Rollers for the auction. Like Curt and Fred, for example. :)
Worst comes to worst, I can always donate my Cheapest Jalopy Award Winner

Well, that is gratifying, and eco-friendly too I suppose by keeping
older vehicles running. I do hope you introduced Carmen to the local
cultural norm of using seatbelts -- this was a common problem in Texas,
where apparently those of recent arrival from lands south of the border
believed that seatbelt use was wimpy, or something. Whatever the
reason, it was not their cultural norm (as was explained in various
articles following significant incidents). Usual results were multiple
injuries/fatalities whenever a driver crashed a vehicle, esp children as
there was always a passel of them rattling around in the vehicle.

Re: [MBZ] Speakers!

2010-08-11 Thread Dwight E. Giles, Jr
That's interesting about the rear speakers. The shop that put in the new
Becker Monza and manual antenna just tested them for receiving power and
said there was power to the rear but not the speakers. . Radio came from
former lister John Peterson-I think out of his 300D 2.5t when he put in a
stock Becker with CD that he bought in Das Vaterland.

Dwights 240D has a very nice Becker Monza stereo but the rear speakers
weren't doing anything so tonight after installing the last sunvisor clip I
investigated. Turns out they were disconnected, the wires were clipped...
They were clipped apparently because they didn't work. Too bad the covers
are awesome brown '70s looking things.
The Alpines in Hammie work but crackle, I presume the moisture from the
leaking rear window was killing them. Turns out they were crackly because
one had apiece of duct tape(!?!) inside. Installed in Dwight's car they
sound pretty good for crappy speakers but are really too big for the holes
and look much less awesome than what was there.
Amazon and Crutchfield agree that these are 5 1/4" speakers, Amazon had a
set of Pioneers for $31 delivered so I sprung for those, they'll go nicely
under the Pioneer grills.

The grills are a little beat up, I think I'll paint them with the same brown
I used on the sunvisor clips, '70srific!

Now lets see if I can get the red 190D inspected. I went by an hour ago but
the local inspection station was packed... May have to go across 2 towns to
the only other one I know of that does diesels.

MA is strange about that, apparently theres an extra fee the inspection
station has to pay to inspect diesels but they don't actually do a diesel

Subject: [MBZ] Odo fixed!

I've been driving Dwight's '78 240D for a week so I figured I ought to do
some fixing on it.
The odo didn't work so I started there. It was more complicated than I
remember but still not too bad. While I was there I cleaned all the wheels.
Why does the trip meter get so much dirtier than the odo?
The left turnsignal was lighting up with the dash lights, the enclosure
inside has melted exactly the same as my '83 240D but I'd used those stupid
xenon bulbs that run hot, dunno why this one did that. A piece of tinfoil
glued in place fixed that. I also glued a couple of the screw posts that had
cracked. Unlike my '83 none of the posts has actually broken off and all the
screws are the stock type.

Dwight had pointed out a trim piece that was loose, most of the red clips
broke on removal, they were replaced with white clips which are apparently
the new red clips.

An oil and filter change with M1 15w50 that was on sale at Autozone but not
as on sale as it would have been had I been near a NAPA, still it was only
~$7 difference. I changed the o-rings on the filter stem, the old ones were
rocks I had to chip off.

Cleaned the dog drool off the windows, its so nice to drive a car with all
clean windows. Removed and replaced the rear seat bottom to get the other
seatbelt out so friends could ride with us to the sidewalk sale in the next
town over.

Now entrance ramps on an incline are another matter-the stick 240D handles
those quiet well. All 240D's require a bit of skill and a basic

Yes-my 240D has not been run on highway recently-I did fill the new
secondary filter with PURGE when I changed it last week. . Again, I would
try eyetalian tune up, filters, and purge before messing with the IP. Just
a conservative strategy.

Carboned up from city driving? Fuel filters?

IIRC the interval on valves is 30,000 miles so maybe adjusting the valves
would help...

I've noticed that Dwight's '78 240D runs a little smoother today after
flogging it up the hills from RI into MA yesterday afternoon.

Re: [MBZ] 123 lust

2010-08-02 Thread Dwight E. Giles, Jr
Agreed-Actually my 124 has grown on me over the five years I have had it.
One day I parked the 123 and 124 side by side-both white so easier to
compare profiles. The 124 looks nice all the way back to rear pillar and
then the raised, shortened trunk seems abrupt where the 123 visually flows
all the way back and balances front and back. . (I know nothing about formal
esthetics, but...) Actually if I found another 300D 2.5t in good condition
I would stock pile it, although I hope to get another 5 or more years out of
mine.

Hi Curt,

In real life I run a residential facility for male adolescents. I started a
car donation fund-raiser about 6 years ago. We have gone through a ton of
cars since then, and we were given a 1984 230E a few years back, a
project car, that was very cool. It wasn't running--- althought I could get
it to backfire and needed a tuneup badly. I ended up selling it to
some Guatamalan gearheads from Danbury CT.
We now have a hobby shop to work on the donated cars and I only wish we
had it back then. It was a Euro spec, like the one on ebay- because MB
was only importing diesels at the time. Very rare.
That ebay car is a beauty. As a 4 cylinder it is probably a little under
powered, but should deliver decent mileage. I believe it is the same engine
used in the 201 chassis the 2.3L... so you should be able to get
replacement parts for it. Gas mileage would be similar to the 201, I would
think, adjusted for the probably heavier W123 chassis. Not a diesel, and
not diesel mileage, of course, but a very unique car on this side of The
Pond. You would probably own the only gas W123 in Massachusetts. Maybe New
England. Anyone know of any others?
Since I want to STAY married, I can't be buying any more cars... but that is
one I'd love to have. Angie would love it. So would Buster, btw. :)

Rolf,
Sounds great-congratulations. Same colors and basic condition as mine. IMHO
it's hard to pay too much for a good 300D 2.5t with those miles and that
repair history. I know that goes against much of the prevailing wisdom here,
I think others have had great experiences with this model. Take it for a
ride and kick that turbo down.

Hi Dwight -
You wrote <>

I kinda saw that coming!  But I learned long ago there's always someone who
knows more than I do - which is true for anyone IMO.

Where are you located?  (I know, I could look it up, but where's the fun it
that?)

I guess the Richmond Va area rec'd the new formulations first?

I need to check the M1 site to see what they say.

Rich mentioned a thread about oil recently - I missed it.  It's been a tough

summer.  I've been preoccupied - the knee I  had replaced last June is
failing - so mobility is harder at the time I need to be up and around -
plus, I'm doing some new stuff work wise which takes a lot of time.

I'll either get a new knee next month or a spacer (Yuck - that's a bad
option)  which will be needed if infection is found during the surgery.
Pre-surgery tests have been negative, but the doc is very cautious.  If the
spacer is used, it'll be in for 2-3 months and I won't be able to put weight

on it.  Fun, Huh?

I'll be looking for that sample --

I needed oil for our '91 300D (182K mi) and finally found some at Advance
Auto - "M1 Turbo Truck" in 5W40. I hesitated at 1st but the bottle says
"substitute for 15W40"

I haven't seen this before. The present oil (15W40 M1) has about 4k on it
so I'm getting ready. But since we're having 100F days here I'm wondering
if it's a good idea to put a 5W in it?

I'm seeing oil pressure around 1.5 bar when idling at 210F.

any comments?

My wife called last night, says Hammie lost power on her way home. She
pulled over and it quit. Tried the key and got a click one time and then
nada...

Sounds strangely like Bob's R's experience no? She says theres a little oil
on the grill, maybe the size of a cd but when the car died there were no
strange noises, it just quit.

I *think* the two symptoms are not related. I'm hoping that (best case
scenario) the fuel filter plugged (its been acting wonky for a little while)
and at the same time a battery cable got loose. She said that once the car
died and wouldn't restart she also couldn't put the windows down...

Could the alternator drag the car so badly it would quit?

My voltmeter will be my first troubleshooting tool in any case.

First, Isolate the problem cylinder by cracking one injector line at
the nozzle holder, one at a time. If you wrap a rag around the line,
that will reduce the chance of getting a Diesel fuel shower when you
open the line. THe cylinder you work on will miss, but if the knock
goes away, that is the offending cylinder.

Once you have identified the offending cylinder, the next step is to
pull the nozzle and holder, and the seal, and in dusk conditions,
look inside the hole of the prechamber to see it the ball is there.
It is about 5/16 dia held in place by an rod that is about 1/8 inch
dia and splits around the ball to hold it. IF the ball is missing,
then you need to replace the prechamber. It takes a special tool to
remove the ring and a special puller.

Then take the nozzle and holder to a shop that has a nozzle tester to
get it checked. It probably is a dribbler. Is so, all 4 nozzles
need to be replaced, and the set recalibrated and tested. Look under
"Diesel fuel Injection" in the yellow pages for a good shop. The
dribbler will take out the prechamber ball. If you need a new set,
Rusty can sell you a new set, recalibrated, and you can put them in
yourself.

BE SURE TO PUT IN A NEW SEAL UNDER ANY INJECTOR YOU REMOVE!! IT IS A
METAL SEAL.

The injection shop should have them or you can buy them from Rusty.

Carbon can cause knocking also, but the carbon is usually the after
affect of another problem. A long hard highway drive can clear out
carbon.

Good luck!

How about an Italian tune up? I find with mine, when I have been driving it

I have a 83 240D (266K). Lately the engine has been giving off a
crackling, knocking sound at low and medium throttle. It is the kind
of knocking sound you get from a gas engine when the octane is too
low. I've tried getting fuel from different stations and have used
additive, no difference. I thought I had water in the fuel but it
didn't change with the next fill up.
Any ideas as to what it could be?

Tom -
You very well may find it in the archives. I'm assuming your '83 126 is
similar to my '81. The problem is that the elastic is gone from the top
horizontal part of the net. It is fairly easy to replace but on my car it
had seen many years of direct sunlight and a lot of the plastic parts have
become very brittle. With this in mind, you have to remove the back from the
seat that needs to have the net repaired. You do that by removing the 2
screws at the base of the seat back and pulling down on the seat back till
it comes free. You should now have access to the screws that hold the
framework for the net in place. This is where I had a bit of a problem as by
the time I had removed the screws from the brackets on my seatback the
frames for the nets had cracked. I was able to epoxy them back together but
try to be as careful as you can when you remove the screws. I was able to
find a very good match for the elastic material at a local REI store, a
camping/sporting goods store. I found the elastic material for a couple of
bucks or so in the rock climbing equipment section with the climbing ropes
and such. A quick search showed the closest REI to you to be in Georgia, a
bit of a trek for some stretch material but I'm guessing you may find a
similar type store nearer to you. You might even try at a sewing and yardage
store. Replacement from this point is fairly obvious. My nets are still nice
and tight and that was about 4 years ago. I just took a quick look at the
EPC to see if the net is available as a separate part. It appears that it
comes with the plastic frame and the part number is 126 810 02 49. I'm sure
Rusty can give you a price.

So I finally had somebody seriously interested in my 190D engine. I spoke to
him on the phone and he sent a deposit and everything...

Then the weird starts. He's coming to get it with his friend's truck and
doesn't want to scratch the bed up so he wants me to drive 45 minutes from
my house to a place with a forklift. Ooooky, well I'm not doin' that for
free... He works out a price to placate me which is fine I guess. So I call
the place today for directions (so I can get there tomorrow) and fortunately
leave my number for the guy who will be helping us who calls me back because
he doesn't know whats going on. They're not open on Saturday, the dude
buying the engine was supposed to get back to him on how we were going to
work this and suddenly it occurs to me that what has happened is the dude
has tried to push them into being open on a Saturday which they don't do and
just assumed they'd do it...

So I'm pissed, I call him and he doesn't answer so I leave voicemail and I
email him. He emails me "You will need to take the engine there Monday and
leave it for me" like I've got nothing better to do Monday than drive 45
minutes in the opposite direction from where I work...

Thats when it occurs to me, whats to stop him from writing me a bad check or
something for payment? He hasn't explained how he's going to pay for it at
this point...

Anyway his deposit goes in the mail back to him tomorrow, washing my hands
of this weirdo.

If he shows up with cash I'll still sell him an engine but otherwise no.

My indy has a small shop in which he works on a surprising number of cars of
all makes. He is originally from Iran and was educated as an engineer.
But, someone from Iran had a hard time finding a job as an engineer in the
early 1980's. Now, his family owns two very large Mercedes dealerships in
Iran, so he was always around MB's. When he couldn't find work as a
mechanical engineer, he relied on what he knew which was cars. He had
various shops, and gas stations, etc. until he bought his current place 20+
years ago. He never wanted to be in the car business, but he does love cars
and he is certainly very successful (you should see some of the beautiful
cars he has restored and sold and a few that he has kept).

Well, his son has grown up around his father's cars and the business. He
wanted his son NOT be in the car business. He wanted him to do something
that he loves. BUT, alas, I think it is going to be cars. His son came
home from his freshman year at University of Kansas and was helping around
the shop. I was there a few weeks ago and his son bought a 1950 Plymouth.
Unbelievably, it ran and ran well. So, he fixed a few things up and cleaned
it. He was going to restore it to perfect condition. 1 week later he sold
it. A local priest came by the shop, saw it, fell in love and begged him to
sell it. Then, he bought an old Jeep Willys pickup (I have never seen one
like it) and started working on it. Boom, sold it in a week. Now, he is
looking for an old International Scout.

Car love. You either have it or you don't. If you do, its incurable.

over the years but never saw a Euro-not sure if I am interested but I love
my brother's W140 gasser.

[MBZ] new Hirschmann antenna FS or trade

2010-06-30 Thread Dwight E. Giles, Jr
Because of a series of miscommunications, mistakes and a working goat rope,
I have a surplus brand new Hirschmann motor and antenna in the MB box for
which I paid 179 USD last summer -it fits late 124's e..g 94-95 and
according to the 124 CD, it can be retrofitted to earlier 124's with MB
supplied pigtail connector. I ended up just buying the exact fit correct
one for my 90 300D from Tom and had my Indy put it in.

E mail me off list for model number etc.

300D- trunk mount OK..)

As a buyer, unless the seller specifically says "phone calls only please,"
"I won't read emails to this address," etc., I'm going to send an email with
questions, not call. As long as the seller is marginally literate I figure
that's a faster way of getting the information I need to figure out if the

Angie wants to go look at an '85 300D down the road on Saturday. They've
marked it at $2700, she wants to offer $1500. The clearcoat is strangely
missing from the roof and hood but it still looks okay from 50'. The dash is
cracked to crap but the dark blue interior looks good otherwise. Theres a
little rust but nothing like my 240D, maybe like my 240D was when I bought
it originally 7 years ago. If we could get 7 years out of another $1500 123
I'd be happy...

Hi ya Wilton and the listers,

I have to appologize, I played a little trick on you. The car mao lend me
was not
the one in the original pictures, that is a parts car he has sitting in the
front
yard to scare off suburbonites, although he'll need some bullet holes in it
to get
the full effect and perhaps have a hound dog living in it.
Anyway I want to say a big thank you to Dan for letting me have his car for
a few
days, he even drove us to our transit hotel at Midway airport, he is one of
natures
gentlemen.
Unfortunatley Georgia and her team did not place in the top ten, so are
going home
without bling. However it was great learning experience for them, as they
stayed at
the UW La Crosse for 4 nights, and where hosted by a host family for a few
more
days before that, so Georgia has really had to go out there and experience a
bit of
life away from the old farts.
Thank you Wilton for being so worried about us and for taking an interest in
how
Georgia did.

Re: [MBZ] Automatic transmissions

Curt,
On both my automatics- 79 240D (the Green goddess) and esp on the 300D 2.5,
servicing the trannies with the magic elixir, the shifts smoothed out-esp.
1-2 hang up on the 2.5 and all shifts on the 240D in winter.

Had an argument with my Indy last week-he claimed that Mobil 1 ATF did not
exist-hmm-theological heresy. It is hard to find around here but the
stealer will now put it in older MB's.
Glad the RI Red is up and running. Maybe we will have to invent some kind of
chicken award for it at the Chowdah fest.

Okay lets talk auto transmissions.
This '84 190D is my second auto and the first I'll have ever messed with. I
intend to do the fluid and filter (to Mobil 1) before anything else.
Yesterday the first couple shifts it'd be real hard on the 1-2 but seemed
fine everywhere else and that seemed to go away after a couple miles.

Hard shifts are modulator problems right? Since they go away as the thing
warms up it might go away with new fluid?

I'm building up a Rusty boat payment list...

OK, here's the deal:
I may need to find a car/truck in the immediate future with a limited budget
of $5,000-$7,000.  I want to find something as late model as possible, and
ideally a small pickup with a crew cab, Nissan preferred.  If it's a car I
need something that can carry stuff, like a small crossover or a Subaru
Forester or something similar.
No old MBs or fixer-uppers.  I need this to be ready to go, reliable
transportation.
Suggestions (realistic ones, that is) are welcome.

I think you have to accept that he was pushing the envelope so to speak and
that the technology to make the designs
leak proof was lacking at the time. The glazing systems now employed in
commercial buildings did not really exist
back when he was doing Falling Water etc. Not uncommon in the architectural
world. The artistic side of the design
often outstretches the ability to build it. Construction people usually do
not like the Architect all that much.

Re: [MBZ] snook/wright

2010-05-27 Thread Dwight E. Giles, Jr
The story is told that at Wingspread Wright told Mrs. Johnson he would
send over some buckets when she complained. . I guess the original leak was
right over the dining room table which was a complicated pull out design
from the kitchen-it could be set and loaded in the kitchen and then slid out
to dining room. They recently-in last decade or so-rebuilt the roof on
Wingspread. Good thing he didn't engineer W124 sunroofs. (MB content)

Good point. Just recently in Seattle there was a newspaper article and TV
coverage of a Wright design house here that nobody wants because of the
repairs it needs even though it is on Puget Sound waterfront property. It's
concrete so can't be moved at any reasonable cost so it looks like it's
going to
be torn down. And, the rebuild of Fallingwater in Pennsylvania to prevent it

falling into the creek a few years back was in the news some time back.

Could be-I never heard those. This article has this quote from Wright-
http://www.metamorfose.ntnu.no/Artikler/Hardarson_all_good_architecture_leak
s.pdf

Another was coined by the famous American architect Frank Lloyd Wright: "If
the roof doesn't leak, the architect hasn't been creative enough"

Some of the problem seems to be that shallow pitch or flat roof designs as
well as materials. But I am not an architect.
