The owner of a Porsche automobile dealership in Charleston is suing its 
former sales manager over allegations that he required customers to make 
under-the-table payments totaling hundreds of thousands of dollars to 
secure the highly sought after vehicles they wanted to buy.


Baker Motor Co., owner of the Porsche Charleston dealership 
 on Savannah Highway in West Ashley, 
is accusing James Marino of pocketing bribes for high-demand cars since 
at least 2022, according to a lawsuit filed in Charleston County court 
.


Marino has not filed a response to the lawsuit, and he could not be 
reached for comment. A lawyer for Baker Motor Co. did not immediately 
respond to an email seeking further information.


Marino had been sales manager at the dealership for six years before 
being terminated in March after the alleged bribery scheme was 
discovered, according to the lawsuit.



 



The dealership "specializes in selling high-end, luxury Porsche 
automobiles," the lawsuit states, adding the vehicles "are in high 
demand, and there are often numerous potential buyers competing for them."


A report by Road & Track 
 
states the timeline for ordering a Porsche can be as little as three 
months, but "the waitlist for models like the 718 generation Cayman or 
even a 992 generation 911 Carrera S can be years long."


"With nearly every Porsche model in high demand, build allocations are 
highly sought after and the models that aren't spoken for upon dealer 
arrival become highly competitive assets," the magazine stated.



 



The lawsuit states that as sales manager, "Marino had the final say in 
determining which potential buyer would be allowed to purchase these 
high-demand automobiles."


Baker Motor says in court documents that Marino's actions were 
"intentional, willful, wanton, reckless and malicious." The company 
wants a judge to force Marino to repay all of the money he made from the 
alleged scheme as well as all of the wages and benefits he received 
during his time at the dealership. Baker Motor is also asking for 
unspecified punitive damages and legal fees.

I believe I have related this story before about a tornado in maybe 1974 
that went through Indiana and did huge amounts of damage.


I belonged to the flying club at Purdue and there was a deal if you 
washed and waxed an airplane you could get a couple hours of flying time 
for free.  I corralled a buddy who also lived in Fort Wayne, we were HS 
friends and classmates and he would go home with me occasionally, to 
come out and help me do the plane.  The club had its planes at this 
little private airport a bit NE of WLafayette kinda out in the country.  
We were out there one afternoon, I think it was a Sunday doing the 
plane, had washed it outside then pushed it into the hangar to wax it 
out of the sun.  It was a gorgeous spring afternoon.


After awhile maybe around 3ish I noticed the sky was getting a little 
weird, kind of a yellow glow, wind had died down and the insects had 
quit making bug noises.  The guy who owned the airport lived in a little 
house there and had a coupla dogs that were acting kinda weird.  I told 
my buddy we should probably think about going back to campus as I had 
seen this before and had an idea of what was coming.  I had a car at the 
time for a little while that my parents had let me take to school for 
some reason I forget and had driven it to the airport.  Anyway, we got 
in the car and put on the radio and the announcers were all screaming 
about storms and tornadoes so we said we had made a good call. Got about 
halfway back to campus and it started raining so hard we couldn't even 
see out of the windshield.  I pulled over best I could to what I thought 
was the side of the road and stopped. Wind was incredible and we both 
thought we were in the middle of a tornado, the radio was saying there 
was one going through and it was bad.  We were both about as scared as 
20yos can be because it was pretty rough.


After a few minutes the rain and wind stopped and the storm passed on by 
and sun came out, it was weird.  We got back to campus and of course 
everyone in the dorm was talking about it.  There were a couple of 
high-rise dorms maybe 1/4-1/2 mile away from ours that you could see, 
they were all saying the tornado was coming right at one of them but 
passed over at the last second and went up into the cloud then dropped 
down again and headed NE.  Next few days the news was full of reports 
about the storm and tornado and damaged it had caused for like 
20-30miles.  It was crazy.


Next weekend I got my buddy and we took the plane up for a reconnoiter.  
Flew to the SW a bit and found where the ground path had started then 
followed it for the whole path and it was 20-30miles.  Stayed pretty low 
so we could see the damage on the ground.  It had the whole deal -- 2x4s 
through phone poles, the path going between a house and shed or garage 
like a plow had torn up the ground but left everything either side 
completely intact.  The craziest thing was this steel truss bridge over 
the Wabash river had been picked up off its pilings and moved like 100ft 
downstream  and dropped intact in the river.


I remembered really bad tornadoes, Palm Sunday in probably 1965 or 1966 
or so that had even worse devastation. My parents went on a drive to 
oogle the damage and that made an impression on me.  This one was right 
up there.


A couple years later kind of the same situation, one spring afternoon it 
was getting a little weird, tornadoes were around, radio was saying 
there was one to the west.  I was living in this apartment complex at 
the time, my window faced west, I was looking out and shonuff about 
5-10miles away I could see one dancing from a cloud.  I kept an eye on 
it for a bit but it went on north of where I was and I don't think it 
actually did much damage anywhere.  Scary enough though.


We have them here on the Island too, I think a few years back associated 
with one of the hurricanes I had a small one hit right in front of the 
house in the woods, a few days later I noticed a bunch of small trees 
down in a swirl pattern.  A bit later I checked out the recorded radar 
path and it looked like it probably did come right through but here the 
strength was not registering so I guess it was not too strong.  It was 
winding and raining pretty hard at the time in the hurricane so did not 
hear or see it directly.


Be vigilant!

stops as she should -valve cover gasket need replacing, you can see and 
smell it -The display screen is pulsing in and out -secondary battery 
bad -AC not blowing cold The good is that she drives/ride nice and 
smooth down the street. Looks great with a good looking interior! Has 
probable $1,500 in wheels and tires on it. Come get her before she goes 
to auction!

The plaster saws I recall had a round blade that oscillated inside a 
cover so that only like 1/4" was exposed and the oscillation was not 
much so it would not damage skin if it hit, and I think they had a 
vacuum attachment to suck up the dust.  I remember wanting one of those 
because I don't think the oscillating saws were on the market.

They did.  I remember the doc using a Fein to cut the cast off me in 1966,
IIRC.  Twenty-five years ago I bought a Fein when it was on clearance,
from someplace or another.  (Electric rather than pneumatic, which was
also available at that time.)  Rarely needed, but there's no substitute for
one when you do need it.

The car in the image is the same color and model as the car I am 
selling, but the one I have is covered so photos are a challenge. Our 
car is not a junker but it is not running either. It has been in my 
driveway covered for several years and I am selling it as is. It is too 
valuable to crush. The right buyer could get it back on the road or sell 
it for parts. I don’t have the time or I would do that. The body is 
virgin and has very little in the way of dings if any. The leather 
interior, while it needs to be cleaned is in excellent condition. The 
car was my late dad’s car and he kept it immaculately. The rear window 
is busted out. I won’t sell the car for metal value as it’s not junk. I 
will however sell it cheap to someone who can make productive use of 
this wonderful S Class Benz gas V8.

Keyanna appears to be a bit difficult, but that said it could be worth 
the ask, but fixing all that stuff is gonna be spendy and not a lot of 
fun although it might just be an ISM or CP for the transmission so 
there's that.  I bet I could get her closer to $1200.


For sale for parts. $1800 without the title $3500 gets you the title 
from the bank. It would be worth the work to fix, just not in my budget 
now. Needs a transmission and 1 strut. Engine runs great and the body is 
in great shape. Only damage is to the driver fender. Suspension on the 
front was redone a little over a year ago, but the car has been sitting 
for a little while because of the transmission. Starts right up. Also 
comes with a replacement sunroof that has not been installed. Engine 
alone is worth more than my asking price, so I’m not planning on being 
flexible. I’m no longer responding to “is it still available” messages. 
Have the money or don’t contact me.

A friend drove me up to Columbia this morning to collect the $2500 
09S550 4matic, 146kmi.  In looking at the specs it is pretty much a base 
model (although the Sonder-klasse is quite well appointed), no real 
options except for 4matic.


Did that no problem although the battery was a little weak but I had 
taken a full complement of road trip support equipment, including a new 
battery and cables.  A quick jump and it lit off fine.  The AC was even 
working, it was throwing a code for the blower regulator the other day 
which I think was intermittent as the AC worked on my test drive.


Battery was apparently fairly recent, I'll have to keep track of it.  
Tires are BFGs about 1.5yr old, so those are very good.


Car was pretty filthy from sitting for awhile in the pollen and crap 
that has been prevalent here the last few weeks so I found a car wash 
close by and ran it through ($10 for a basic wash, damn prices have 
really gone up sicne whenever I did my last auto wash) and it came out 
looking pretty good though still a bit crusty.  Paint needs a full 
correction and I think it will look really nice.  No dings anywhere but 
a bunch of little stone chips here and there, I can live with that for 
now.  Looks really nice from 20ft though and the interior is in very 
good condition though filthy with dog hair.  Full detail in the near future.


Hit a QT and filled up with hi-test and hit the road.  The front axles 
are shot and were complaining mightily on turns, and a bit less so 
straight ahead, more so on acceleration, so I was more than somewhat 
concerned about potential failure leaving me DOTSOTR. But what the hell, 
a journey is when you overcome adversity to reach your destination.  I 
kept the speed to 70mph or so which I observed was quite comfortable as 
everyone else was weaving around going 72-74 or more and I mostly just 
cruised along with no drama while being passed.  I could hear and feel 
the axles although I did have to drop the windows as the AC blower gave 
up after a little bit.  No problem as it was a beautiful 74F today, but 
the noise was a bit annoying.  My friend who gave me the ride up was 
following behind so if I had to bail out at least only the car would be 
stranded somewhere.  That was comforting.


Made it home fine, no failures, an extremely comfortable big cruiser 
ride, dash was saying 22.1mpg and the gas gauge did not drop as much as 
I would have expected so maybe that was close.


Got home and found a set of RockAuto front axels on the porch along with 
a blower regulator from Amazon, stuff I ordered on Wednesday, so I guess 
I know what the weekend will entail.  New break pats arriving tomorrow I 
think, and a headlight xenon bulb ($$!!!) it needs.  I think that is all 
the immediate maintenance required. I should probably look at the break 
roders too, maybe I will need a new set of those.  I notice the tranny 
was shifting a bit slowly so I will do a fluid/filter change on that 
soon, engine oil change and probably diffs too while I'm at it.


I think this will have been an excellent purchase and I am excited to do 
some road trips in it.

I watched a utuber vid from this Aussie guy MGUY who has gone on a total 
rant about EVs.  He had one on about the Hertz EVs they were renting, 
and they had to be returned with 90% charge and if not you would get 
charged (see what I did there) for the charge to capacity, kinda like 
the usurious gas refill costs.  Turns out though that Hertz had the 
charge levels capped at 90%, so even if a renter managed to find a 
charge point close to the rental location (and wait a coupla hours to 
charge it) it would only go to 90% so by the time you got back to the 
drop-off it was below 90 and there was a surcharge on the bill.  Nice.


Apparently EV batteries don't like to be charged to 100% constantly, or 
charged to a high level frequently like if you are driving a distance 
and want to recharge but then the car says no you have to wait awhile 
before I will let me be charged up again.  So you're basically f'd if 
you are trying to make any distance in any sort of time comparable to a 
IC vehicle.

Hoovie has another channel with his gf called Good Morning Youtube.  
Last night I was watching yesterday's episode and they did it on the top 
10 worst selling cars.  Stellantis (which I guess Chrysler now is?  
Chinese company?  No idea) has 5 vehicles in the top 10, some of the 
vehicles had over a year supply in inventory around the country.  There 
were both petrol and electron vehicles on the list.  The prices for 
these vehicles were astounding since I have not priced a new vehicle in 
24yr. Coupled with high interest rates it is no wonder people are not 
buying these things.  I think the fastest selling was a Honda CRV or 
Toyota RAV4, one of those, which had a 3-4day supply in inventory.

evening. Within about 5 minutes after totality, clouds cleared and 
hardly a cloud in the sky.

So the girl selling it was really sweet and probably would have just 
given me the car if we talked about it more.  She was selling it for her 
mom and just wanted someone to take care of it.  I made her an offer and 
she accepted it right away, I probably could have offered a lot less but 
she was so nice and easy to deal with I didn't want to be a LOBALLER 
jerk.  So anyway $2500 which is a hell of a deal. I actually don't think 
she had a sense that she could have asked a lot more for it, but I guess 
I was the only one to bite because of what she mentioned it needed.  
Whatever, I'm really pleased with the car and the deal.  It's kind of a 
"base model" S550, really no options, but it will be a decent ride no 
matter.


It looks to be in really nice condition, black leather interior looks 
really good, a few little bits that could stand to be replaced but that 
is junkyard stuff I can look for over time.  Paint was all really good 
as far as I could tell under the grime from sitting.  She said it did 
get sideswiped a coupla years ago on driver side and she had doors and 
fender replaced with OE parts, no frame damage just mostly superficial, 
I couldn't tell anything by the paint, maybe she got black parts to match.


Drove it and it ran fine, RF CV joint was clattering on turns and the AC 
was intermittent, had a "F" code on the regulator/resistor.  I'll get 
one and swap it there so I have AC to drive home, $40 and an easy job 
looks like, pretty much the same as on the 211 wagon I did a year or two 
ago. She said the AC needed to be charged (I think because the regulator 
issue), a scan showed the pressure was a little low but it was cooling 
OK when it ran so will need to dump in a bit of juice.


The airmatic was a little unbalanced but it probably needs a reset to 
get all the corners happy with one another, but no faults on the system 
so that was good.  She said she had new front struts put on about 1.5yr 
ago so that was good.  BFG all weather tires are late 2022 and have lots 
of tread left on them so that right there is probably $800+ worth.


I'm going to order front axle shafts, blower regulator, break pats, and 
xenon bulbs (damn those things are expensive and was the only other F 
code).  The front axle shaft is the only major effort but actually 
doesn't look too bad.


It's filthy inside with dog hair so will need a good detail in and out 
but that is not bad to do.


I gotta find someone to drive up there so I can collect it this week, 
will check in with friends and see who is up for a road trip.


Oh, so the sticker -- I remarked on it and she laughed and said her 
granddad had given her a 84? 300D that had been his and it came with 
that sticker on it, so she found another one and put it on the S550, 
thought it was kinda funny and the old guy liked it.    I might keep it 
along with a Greta sticker.
