Re: [MBZ] (SPAM?) Re: OT: Transposing trumpet

2009-01-12 Thread Michael Baker
Had to transpose and sight read at the same time quite often when I
made my living in the bars and clubs during my wayward youth in the 60s.

But, you don't need to stress over sight reading. Just pick the
hymns, or any song, that you want to play and write out the
transposition on staff paper (yes, they still sell it.) Trumpet is a
B flat instrument; which means that when a piano plays B flat the
trumpet plays C natural. Write out the melody one full step above the
hymnal and join in the fun.

I can play out of the hymnal, too. But can anyone else play
with me? Well yes, if it's a clarinet, tenor sax, etc.

Re: [MBZ] Hydrogen Power?

2008-05-19 Thread Michael Baker
It's hard for me to imagine that seemingly rational adults would get
taken in by this scam. HHO, 2 molecules of hydrogen and 1 of oxygen,
is H2O - WATER! There is no such thing as Brown's Gas. Their device
is nothing more than a water injection system. Many people in the
automotive aftermarket, most notably George Spears at the old
Spearco, have made a living selling water injection systems. They
work; but it is very difficult to avoid engine damage. Looking at the
system on the website of these 2 guys, my opinion is that many people
are going to find engine rebuilds in their near future.

After 38 years developing, manufacturing, and marketing performance
products accessories (I was also the first US commercial importer
of AMG products) I can say unequivocally that this device is a hoax;
and, that there has never been a 65 MPG carburetor. Yes I got to play
with the Fish carburetor when I was working with induction systems in
the seventies - just another metered leak. Having been intimately
involved in the search for efficiency and alternative fuels, I can
also say that I have never seen any viable technology crushed or
otherwise hidden from public view by those evil corporations. Quite
the contrary, I see them spending billions of dollars in the quest
for efficiency and alternative fuels only to be denigrated by
hucksters and socialists.

I like Coast to Coast AM; it's a hoot. But, you must be very careful
about what you believe. Makes me wonder how much George Noory was
paid by these con men for the 3-hour infomercial.

I've been looking at that and thinking about it for a while. I can't see

small amount of Brown's gas (hydrogen and the oxygen that it was split

the combustion process enough to actually give more power and thus more
mileage from each gallon of fuel. I have seen the power increase from
propane injection on a diesel truck so I can't say that this won't work.
Probably will try it sometime once I get some time to play just to see.

They are burning hydrogen in the engine.

They are using power from the battery to split water into hydrogen
   oxygen.

But where does the power come from that's stored in the battery?

  From the alternator, right?

And the alternator is powered by (drum roll please), the engine?

So, it goes like this..

They are using power from the engine to generate electricity, which is
   used
to generate hydrogen, which is then fed back into the engine to
   generate
more power.

The issue with this system is that in an absolute perfect, no loss
   system,
the results would be a net zero! In other words, no gain!

In the real world, you loose energy with every step in the process

The engines run well but they suffer from oil leaks around the cam carrier
the leaks are a royal pain to correct, involving the removal of the upper,

cams before pulling the lower carrier. Fortunately, you just tie the chain

Also, both of mine needed at least mid-grade gas to not diesel when turned

Not at all. Climate is a long term average over a wide area, and tends
to be predictable, whereas day-to-day weather for any given location is
chaotic. I point this out because the fact that you don't understand it
to me means all your other rationalizations are suspect.

To use an automotive example, I can say with pretty high certainty that
if I average the fuel economy of my Ford over an entire year, it will
get very close to 20 mpg. However, if I try to specify what my fuel
economy for any given day is, I could be way off, because I might get
stuck in a traffic jam and spend a lot of time idling.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Series on Global Warming

2007-02-06 Thread Michael Baker
Mars? ALL of the planets in our solar system are heating up. Maybe
all that CO from my Suburban has gone straight to Jupiter. Our sun is
supposed to be at a solar minimum and yet it is popping off some of
the biggest solar flares ever witnessed by mankind. If warming of the
earth is occurring, could that have something to do with it?

Melting of the ice caps? There was less sea ice in the arctic during
the 1850's that there is today. One could almost sail the fabled
northwest passage. Do you think that Greenland's melting glaciers are
going to innundate us? How do you think the island came by the name
Greenland? When the Vikings settled there much of it was green; not
covered fully with ice! The return of ice is what drove them out.
Every year the United Nations release a different prediction for sea
level rise due to global warming. First it was many feet, then it was
a centimeter or two, now it is several inches. The United Nations
says that sea levels have risen an average of 0.07 inches over the
last 50 years. As this number is smaller than the natural variation
of the oceans, environmentalists were actively lobbying the United
Nations to up that number beyond the natural variation in the final
report so that they could say there's proof that the oceans are rising.

Is global warming actually occurring on an unnatural scale? As we
have only had the scientific ability to accurately measure global
temperature since the late 1970's, what pseudo-scientist can claim
larger than natural increases over the last 150 years? The
temperatures of the earth's oceans are what drive our climate. Before
satellites we only had the haphazard anecdotal evidence of sea
captains' temperature measurements as they traveled standard shipping
routes. While satellites do see a small rise in sea temperature, in
fact there is some scientific evidence that might indicate that the
warming is coming from the ocean floor up rather than from the surface down!

Worried about the United Nations' report on global warming. It says
right in it that some of the science has been changed to reflect the
political goals of the organization! What's up with that?

Environmental activists and the media have lost all credibility with
me by reporting hypothesis as fact. The dire global warming
predictions are coming from computer modeling; not actual scientific
experimentation. Those guys cannot accurately predict next week's or
next year's weather much less weather trends over the next 100 years.
Al Gore is obviously still buying pot by the pound from the same
dealer he used when he was a young man. Remember those dire
predictions for a catastrophic 2006 hurricane season due to global
warming? Do you still put your whole faith in those people?

When Clinton released his famous global warming report signed onto by
2000 scientists, there was not one climatologist who signed! Who are
these scientists everyone keeps saying have a consensus on the
accuracy of global warming predictions? Is it the dizzy blond hosting
the Weather Channel entertainment shows? She doesn't do climate
research. How come the scientists who actually do the modeling and
study the climate are not speaking out and writing articles?

Remember Dr. Paul Erlich and The Population Bomb? His environmental
activist replay of Malthusian theories sold a lot of books. But,
Erlich and Malthus were both wrong. In fact not one thing Erlich ever
predicted came to pass.

I encourage you to use your noodle and take in both sides of this
argument with a skeptical view. There's a lot of junk science,
propaganda, and lies out there. Try using your brain and doing a
little research before you parrot the propaganda.

Before you sell your SUV you should also know that the United Nations
says that more CO2 is contributed to out atmosphere by animals than
by humans. I don't deny global warming. I merely say that it isn't proven.

Re: [MBZ] manual tire changers

2005-06-24 Thread Michael Baker

Ken,
What brand and model of tire changer do you use?

I use one every time I need to mount a tire. I buy my tires loose, mount
and balance them myself. The bubble balancer works well...you can balance a
tire with it. Better than letting a tire jockey strip your mounting lugs or
torque them to 400 ft/lbs so you can't change a tire on the road.

Subject: [MBZ] manual tire changers

Anybody ever used one of those manual tire changers like you can get at
harbor freight? Thinking about getting one of those and a manual tire
balancer. Have heard you can get tires balanced pretty darn good with a
plain old manual bubble balancer. Just wondered how good the manual
changer worked though. Would rather have a pneumatic one though but
 those are too expensive.
