Re: [MBZ] [ SPAM ] brake anti-squeal paste
We had this discussion some time back, and someone recommended grinding the leading edges of the pads at a 45 degree angle to eliminate squeel. Of course, I can never remember this when I'm changing pads, so I've never tried it. I should pull the rear pads on the SDL - they squeel loudly when braking and backing out of the drive. I'd have to grind the back edges though --- -- OK Don, KD5NRO Norman, OK "If Tyranny and Oppression come to this land, it will be in the guise of fighting a foreign enemy." -James Madison '90 300D, '87 300SDL, '81 240D, '78 450SLC, '97 Ply Grand Voyager

Re: [MBZ] [ SPAM ] brake anti-squeal paste
Several cogent points here: Cheapo pads that don't wear the rotors wear out super fast and don't usually stop the car nearly as well as the OEM pads. Learned that lesson 25 years ago -- stick with the OEM ones, rotor wear is normal, and they are cheap. Much cheaper than rear-ending someone because your cheapo pads overheated and quit working right. Second, if the ceramic pads (or any other for that matter) do not have the heavy anti squeal coating on the back of the backing plate, you MUST use an anti-squeal shim or they will scream. Also make positively certain that the slots in the calipers are completely clean, otherwise the pad will stick, causing both drag and squeal. Another cause of squeal is tired caliper piston seal not retracting the piston enough, allowing minor drag and hence uneven wear. Last, when installing new rotors, use some heavy sandpaper to rough them up (not the newest ones where you dont' remove the coating, though) -- most of them are turned these days, not ground, and if you don't rough up the surface, the spiral groove left by the manufacturing process will cause them to groan for quite a while, even after they wear it some. Not pleasant. Re: [MBZ] [ SPAM ] brake anti-squeal paste
I can't argue on that. I don't know how they work on older vehicles. My reference is contrast to the "metalic" pads. Most of the hard pads have some sort of metal in them. Let us know how the pads and rotors are as you rack up the miles. Loren At 01:15 AM 6/6/2007, you wrote: I used to subscribe to the "cheapest is best" theory but then I put ceramic pads on the Jeep. Anti-seize, any type, although the Benz stuff is copper base, not aluminum. Apply to rear of pad, and the side of the backing plate (NOT the friction material). Peter
