Update 2 and Final report:

Transmission shifts again. All seems to be normal. Indications are
it was a collapsed filter. The guy charged $80 to change fluid and
filter, and he provided the fluid. I provided the filter. (Thanks
Q!)

So, for me, it will be Mann filters form now on, per recommendation
of Sun Valley.

Update 1:

I had Q send out a Mann filter and gasket. Today the local
Independent shop put it in. on the hoist, the trans shifted through
all the gears. TOmorrow he is going to road test it. I'd have to
check the book for her car, but I think I put the filter and fluid in
last march, but it may have been Christmas. Certainaly WELL under
30k miles. Probably 10 k.

So it appears that perhaps the elring filter DID collapse, as they
are known to do in the 124. I used the elring filter because it was
one I had before the filter collapsed on the 124. I plan to ONLY buy
Mann from now on. Q will provide either. But for minimal differenc
in price, the risk of a filter collapse and being 500 miles form home
is not worth any savings on the filter.

So Mr. Q, when I call in for trans filters, it will MANN for me.

Next update after the road test tomorrow to see if it is "cured" or not.

Check to make sure the kickdown switch isn't stuck, too.

Peter

Yeah, good idea. I thought of it too. Here are the results:

"Shifting to neutral helps. I didn't take it out of the neighborhood
so I'm not sure if that works past the first shift or not. Not yet
anyway. The kickdown switch was out and able to be pressed in
repeatedly and came right back out with no change. I didn't do
anything with wires to it."

So, it appears not to be a problem with the kickdown, although that
is not 100% certain. Bergstra has a video about his SDL not shifting
after fluid/filter change. THat was interesting. It was the
kickdown switch in that case.

2012-11-04 Thread Curt Raymond
My '96 Dodge Dakota did that, Angie drove all the way home in low one day, boy
she was happy with me...

I sucked a quart of fluid out with my topsider and put in a quart of the Lucas
trans stuff. Flailed it around for a half an hour, let it sit over night and
the next day it was improved. It improved more over the next couple days until
it was basically normal. I had a filter and fluid and it went another 20,000
miles.
My best guess was it had a sticky valve and the high detergent (even for ATF)
Lucas stuff helped flush it out.

Maybe get her to try slipping it into neutral while moving and then back into
drive, that helped on my Dakota.

#1 daughter called and said she had been out driving earlier this
afternoon, came home, and left again. When she turned onto the major
highway, the car would not shift out of low. She tried turning the
car off and restarting. The fluid was between the min and max marks.
Fluid and filter were changed a year ago.

Neutral (Park) safety switch is getting flakey, but works after the
shifter is run down and back.

Kinda sounds like the 124 elring filter collapse. But I never heard
of that in a 107, or anything but a 124.

Anyone else have any other ideas?

total vacuum failure (unhooked hose to modulator) should result in
very harsh and high RPM shifts.

Filter and fluid change is cheap and easy.

Plugged fuel filters can affect Trans shifting in diesels.

Forgot to add that it will go forward and in reverse.

What is the failure mode of a modulator?
