Finished the job today. Inner bolt on the upper arm, left side, is a bugger. All in all pretty straightforward once you know the wheel carrier has to come out. On the right side, you have to take out the washer tank, battery, and battery tray. While the tray was out, I cleaned it and primed and painted it. On the left side, I took loose the vacuum line at the booster and a cable terminal block at the inner firewall to try to get my hand in. As always, you have to be careful with the little nipple for the branch vacuum line. On the washer tank, one of the rubber seals for the pumps broke, so now I need to send more jingies to Mr. Q. Forgot to pump up the brakes first. Got a thrill when I got to the end of the drive. Got the brakes working but did not test drive it yet. Spent the limited daylight messing with the tractor. Actually it cannot be extracted and inserted with the hub still attached to the knuckle. It is pressed into the knuckle from the top, and the bore for it is angled so that the top of the LBJ leans toward the spindle/hub. -- John W Reames jwrea...@comcast.net Home: +14106646986 Mobile: +14437915905 On Oct 31, 2010, at 10:34, Dieselhead <126die...@gmail.com> wrote: I am about to embark on changing the lower joints on the 126. Re: [MBZ] 126 ball joints
I printed out the jobs, but never really looked at them. Took them apart, beat out the old ball joints and pressed the new ones in. Rusty's proper press is just slick. It only takes about 2 minutes each to press in the new joints. Whole job is about 4 hours so far; To take apart the front wheel carrier, beat out the ball joint and press in the new joint, then reassemble. It seemed like the most time was spent trying to beat out the old joints. At least 1 hour, I am sure. I put never-seez on the 6mm bolts for the brake backer and the ABS sensor. Problem is the left side upper boot is toast. So I ordered new upper arms. When they get in I will finish putting it all back together. Unfortunately, the upper boots are NA. I suppose I should have bought some shoo goo and liberally coated the old boots. Oh well Q fixed me right up, as usual. Actually it cannot be extracted and inserted with the hub still attached to the knuckle. Re: [MBZ] 126 ball joints
OK, so it sounds like it has to come off. Taking off the hub is no problem. How long does it take to do both sides? A day for the backyarder? Re: [MBZ] 126 ball joints
There is no way to remove the ball joint with the wheel and caliper installed. You will have to remove the steering knuckle from the car, put it in a large vise, and drive out the ball joint from the bottom with a 10 lb sledge and a driver of some sort (unless you have the factory tool, in which case you MIGHT be able to press it out. FSM says drive it out with hammer and driver). Then you will have to have either the factory tool or a suitable substitute that will press the ball joint in -- the steering knuckle has a recess where the ball joint goes, and a standard press will not work, it won't fit. You can modify a Harbor Freight tool by grinding off some of the top end to fit inside and welding some plates on the side to stiffen it (otherwise it bends), then remove the boot from the joint and pull it in. You cannot use a frame press for the same reason -- the upper part of the steering knuckle is over the ball joint. This is why it usually cost about $100 a side, the tools are expensive and it's fiddly. [MBZ] 126 ball joints
I am about to embark on changing the lower joints on the 126. The book says to take the wheel carrier loose before you start. Seems to me that it could be extracted with the hub and upper joint still connected. Anyone got advice for 126 LBJ R&R?
