Supposedly, MB engineers said this sedan was the best they ever built
(the remar was made in the mid 90s) and having owned 2 280SEs 4.5 - I can
believe it. Except for rust problems (rockers, bumper support, headlight
boxes) they were awesome. Engine got 14/15 mpg but would spin the tires at
45mph when passing gear was engaged.

Let's not get carried away in heaping praise on these dinosaurs.

They are in reality gas hogs with pathetic 3 speed transmissions, clunky
vinyl interiors, easily frozen heater levers, and prone to rust. I will
admit that they are spacious and comfy, however.

Don't get me wrong. I agree entirely about the looks of the W108/109 body

I owned and restored a W109 1971 300SE L 3.5 that I loved. But it had a 4
speed transmission, leather seats, burled walnut interior and air
suspension. Those luxury appointments made all the difference.

2008-12-19 Thread Peter Frederick
Ah, but they are a joy to drive on the highway. Super sweet between
90 and 100 mph, and they still get 12 mph while you do it.

That pathetic 3-speed usually lasts longer than the car (and was
used from 1988 to 1981 in the W108/109 and W116 cars) and is silky
smooth. The pathetic one was the 4-speed used with the M100 in the
W109 6.3L -- never did hold up with crap and didn't have a torque
converter, used a fluid coupling instead. Very very common to have
to get it rebuilt every 50,000 miles or so, and even they they slip
if you romp on it a lot (which is very tempting, I'm told).

Can't speak for the trouble free part 'cause I sold my long

liked the engineering I saw. I would not be disappointed if I

IF they were greased properly, they are usually in great shape.

True, a huge pain to work on, but mine are near perfect. One upper
bushing was improperly installed so shot, but else fine. Greasing
them every 3000 miles does the trick.

Re: [MBZ] 1972 280SEL w. 4.5? liter engine 87k original miles? Asking$2000 OBO

2008-12-17 Thread Tom Hargrave
I've had 2 of these and they are great cars.

Value can easily exceed 8 - 10K for a pristine example. A 300SEL 4.5 can go
for even more.

Thanks,
