300D. In 2007 the rust just exploded like unchecked bacteria. It had

let me down and was the best car I'll ever own, but ooh the 140 is a
smooth ride. Still yearn for something with a clutch, though.

The '87 is kind of an inflection point between old and new Mercedes
diesel car technology. It's old enough to have a purely mechanical
engine control system (before any of you pedants get after me, yes, I
know about the EDS, but since the engine can run just fine without it
I don't think it counts) , but new enough to have plenty of power,
modern comforts and conveniences, and handling nearly as good as
modern sports sedans.

There never were many of these in the USA to begin with (only imported
in '87), and they definitely aren't making any more like that. I
would say even a shabby example is worth fixing up.

That being said, the one in the CL ad will almost certainly need a ton
of work to run and drive as well as your '95, from your description of
the money you've put into the latter car. Figure on a full suspension
rebuild ($2,000 at an independent mechanic, more at the dealer); A/C
repair (anywhere from $1,000 for a new compressor and condensor, to
$3,000 for the evaporator); all vacuum lines replaced and transmission
vacuum control adjusted ($300 or so). Check carefully for any signs
of recent cooling system trouble, coolant in the oil, or oil in the
coolant, which could indicate a cracked head ($10,000+ to fix)---if
you don't see anything like that, then you are probably safe from the
OM603 engine's infamous propensity to blow heads. (If you really want
to be sure you can look at the head casting number since the head has
been revised many times by Mercedes in the past 20 years, but I would
argue that even the very first version of the head is OK if it has
lasted 300K mi. already without cracking.)

I would never consider selling my '87---they are wonderful cars when
sorted out and perhaps even a future collectible due to their rarity.

Remember my wife - pick of the litter rule? The only way to distract her
from the E320 would be to pull a late model Volvo Cross Country in the
driveway. My E320 has already had the wiring harness done, evap and a new
tranny. All but tranny by Benz dealer, under the first owner. This is a
car with a maint receipt every 2K with over $50K in maint over the first 12
years. It is literaly perfect. Sorry - not selling this one ever.

I love diesels.

The price seems right. This model automobile has excellent steering.

What makes me nervous? Illinois and rust secondly as far as I know in 87
they did not come with tilt wheels. Some had extension/retraction wheels
but not tilt.

Anyone else care to elaborate or straighten me out?

Okay - I'll bite. I have never had a diesel and want you guys to tell me
if

this would be a good one to own. My current benz is a 1995 E320 and I have
been pretty impressed with the design and performance. What do I need to
be

aware of on this car? How about auto tranny? Do they last longer on a
understressed diesel then on my way to powerflow gasser?

I'm thinking about looking at the car tommorow what should I look for?

It seems like there is a whole generation between the 87 and the 95. The 95
has all the cool features that went into the 124. It is certainly going to be
a different car than the '87 and the difference in diesel to gasser is going to
be huge!

I think you should fix the evap and the wiring harness on the 95 and then sell
it to me, cheap! I really do like the 95 E320.

All of what he said but also don't forget to make sure the head has
been upgraded to at least a # 17 and the cat converter in the engine
compartment has been replaced.

IOW, lots of issues!

For the price, you might not get hurt too much. At 300k, it needs
new nozzles, a new timing chain and new chain guides. While you are
doing that, may was well put on a new tensioner and water
pump/thermostat. If they have evidence the PO replaced those within
100k or so, that is a plus.

If the chain stretch measures ok, it most likely will need the new
guides within 50k, or they might break the chain, and that breaks the
cam and the cam bearings.

If you do the work yourself, you are looking at maybe $500 for parts.

Check the jack points for rust. Check the shocks. If they are not
Bilsteins, deduct $500-$750. have an alignment shop check the
suspension.
