It's being advertised by a friend of the owner, who sounds to be older than
dirt and a bit of a Luddite (I'm not criticizing, just laying out the
situation.)

Second owner, 187k, uses an independent to service it. From the sounds of
things, the independent has kids in college or several boat payments he has to
make. I say that because the owner has done things like replace all the
injectors, all of the coil packs, etc. based on his mechanic's recommendations.

All service records from both owners.

The CL lister is a friend who runs a detailing service. He's telling me there's
some paint fade but the clear coat is intact. The owner says everything works
on the car but the antenna.

The transmission has not been rebuilt as the ad states, but it was shifting poorly on the
3-4 upshift and the owner said his mechanic replaced the filter and fluid. Based on the
amount he quoted for the repair it sound like the electronics at the valve body that
commonly fails (I can't recall what this is called right now) got replaced. He said
"It shifts fine now."

I don't know a whole lot more at this point, but I'm going to see the car after
work. I know all the usual W140 stuff to check, but if anyone wants to weigh in
on M120 details I'm all ears, as well as on anything else they might feel is

I'm a little scared of the M120, mainly because I'm unfamiliar with it. I don't
need a money pit. I'm hoping that 187k is as minor a concern on an M120 as it
would be for me on an M119.

Re: [MBZ] Am I on Crack?

2015-05-05 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I don't know the details on the paint fade. It's possible the guy lives in one
of the snowbird 60's vintage homes in that area that just have car ports.

It was such an ordeal trying to communicate with him because his hearing is
obviously not 100% that I pretty much gave up trying to get details. I'll just
take a look at it and go from there.

The guy that listed it for him said someone has been calling and making offers
but they can't get over to see it for a week or something goofy like that.
Apparently they have talked to the owner as well, as he made some comments
about someone making him an offer without seeing the car and asking if he would
put a lower sale price on the title. Being an older person, that freaked him
out.

Re: [MBZ] Am I on Crack?

2015-05-05 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
A cynic would ask why spend all that money on themechanicals if he left it
out in the sun to fade the paint?

I would definitely see and test drive the car, then if it checks out make a
low enough offer to cover you in case something major (transmission, e.g.)
fails in the first year. With those sh*tt* photos no fear of a bidding
war... There is nothing like this on ebay currently...

Re: [MBZ] Am I on Crack?

2015-05-05 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes

Yes you are on crack but you could still buy it and have some fun.

A coupla years ago an S600 was for auction at a tow yard, I went over
there and got there just as they were selling it, went for something
like $2300. Looked like a doper car, probably repo or something, but in
half OK condition. Guy who bought it looked like a low-end used car lot
dealer. I figured for that money if nothing else the parts would be
worth at least 2X that. Whatever, I didn't buy it...

So some time later I am at some dinner my wife organized with some of
her colleagues, get talking to one guy who was a drug developer doc of
some sort, says he collected various cars, had his own semi to haul them
around in (!!!). I had seen an S600 parked in her lot by her office,
asked him if that was his. He said yeah, he had bought it a year or so
ago, used, got a good deal on it. I told him I had heard those things
were troublesome and pricey to fix (not that the money would have been
an issue for him), he said it had been no problem and loved the car. So
there is that datum.

For that kind of money just buy the damn thing and drive it til it breaks.

He just had ALL the coils replaced based on his mechanic's recommendation.
Holy. That was a four digit bill right there.

He definitely spares no expense to maintain it, and he said the first owner had
a Mercedes warranty through 100k that he milked the heck out of. I'll need to
pore over the records to get an idea of what has been dealt with, but it

All service records from both owners.

The CL lister is a friend who runs a detailing service. He's telling me there's

on the car but the antenna.

The transmission has not been rebuilt as the ad states, but it was shifting poorly on the

Joe,

Your 300D looks very nice. If I were in the market, I would not
hesitate at the price you set. The only downside I see is that it is

White is a great Mercedes color. Our '67 200D was called the "White
Tornado" by our sons classmates because it would take a half mile to get it
up to 45 mph by very carefully feeding power to the slipping clutch. No
drag racing, no jackrabbit starts for the White Tornado. With a hole in the
muffler and 4000 rpm in second gear, everyone knew when our son had arrived.
We let it slip until he finished high school. It was a very effective
safety factor.

Re: [MBZ] Am I on crack...?

2007-11-09 Thread E M
I think it's fair for a car is the shape described. I'd pay it. Only
thing, I keep hearing all these stories about how long lived diesels are and
then see many with engine rebuilds at less than 400,000 kms. Nothing wrong
with a rebuild engine, but makes me question the premium often asked for old
diesels? I have over 350,000kms on my gasser now, and it's all original.
Engine is strong and trans shifts well, so I do question the whole, "diesels
go forever thing".

But to answer your question, I think your car seems like a fair deal. I
even think the colour is pretty good. :-)

Re: [MBZ] Am I on crack...?

2007-11-09 Thread R A Bennell
It is funny how some colors stand the test of time and others become very
dated. The golds and avocado greens of
the 70's have not really stood the test of time like some colors do. We still
have an avocado green refrigerator in
the basement. Don't mind the color but wouldn't want it in the kitchen now.

Sometimes if the vehicle gets old enough, the color starts to look good again.
I have a 68 Chevy pickup that is
light blue. I can't say I have ever really liked the color and for a long time,
I planned to paint it a darker
blue. Now, I wouldn't do that. I guess it grew on me because now I do not think
the truck would look quite right in
a newer color.

"If only it was not that color."

That is a color only an owner can love.

My '77 is that color. It is affectionately called "the Mustard Mobile" by my
kids.

I've seen the car in question in person, it's in incredible shape. I don't
think the pictures really do it justice.

close to this I'll probably list it on fleabay and let the chips fall
