[MBZ] Another Transmission Problem

2006-10-16 Thread Bill Phelps
I have a problem with my 85 300SD transmission that I would like to explore.
The
transmission and torque converter were replaced in Oct 2003. It has logged
30k miles.
I bought it from Rusty. It is filled with Mobil1Synthetic fluid .

It has been performing flawlessly until recently.

In the past few weeks, I noticed the forward shifts, all of them, where
harsher than
in the past. I attributed this to vacuum and made a note to go over the vac
system soon.
However, yesterday I parked the car and made a quick dash into a store. I
returned to the car,
fired it up, put it in drive, but the transmission did not engage. Not
forward or reverse.
Revving up the engine makes no difference.Fluid level fine, nice and pink.

Other than the harsher shifts, there were no other symptoms, sounds,
on-the-road problems, or fluid leaks.
It simply stopped working.

Does this sound like a valve body seal problem? Maybe a bad torque
converter? Modulator?

Bill Phelps

Sounds like you had a 3 year/30k warranty.

Re: [MBZ] Another Transmission Problem

2006-10-18 Thread LarryT
Have you - or did you - change the ATF during those 30k miles? We see it in
engines often - even brand new engines from Mercedes, Ferrari & Porsche -
have high levels of contaminants from the assembly and production of the
engines. I always suggest people with new cars change their oil between
3000 and 5000 regardless of what the Owners Manual or dealer says. We've
tested the oil and it always has high levels until that first test - but
afterward the levels return to normal.

I have no idea who does Rusty's tranny rebuilds but I doubt their assembly
rooms are cleaner than the MB assembly rooms - and all it takes is a little
junk to get into the valve body and cause odd behaviour. Of course, it may
be something else entirely.

From the systems I would think one or more valves has stuck - as you
suggest. In any case, changing the ATF at this point would be the least
expensive thing possible to try.

YMMV -
Good luck -

Could it be you have a selector problem? Or perhaps you have a problem with
the valve body, like a sticky valve that is now stuck open? I am guessing
here but would advise to get under the car and make sure the selector is
selecting. Other than that it is expert time. Perhaps drain the fluid and
drop the pan to see if there is anything untoward in there.

Same thing happened to my W126, the valve body had something stuck. Took out
cleaned and everything was OK.

Re: [MBZ] Another Transmission Problem

2006-10-25 Thread BIll Phelps
Thanks to all who answer my original request. Taking your advice, I checked
the selector.
All OK there. Dropped the tranny pan last Saturday. There were no debris
present. The fluid
was clear though slightly dark with a mid burnt smell. The filter appeared
to almost completely
blocked so I figured I had the problem in hand. I inspected the visible
parts and all seemed in
order.

Fluid from the torque was also devoid of any debris.

After cleaning the pan and buttoning the tranny up, I installed new Mobil1
atf. Fired up the car and..
no change.

Still no forward or reverse at any rpm.

Are there any further thoughts?

Sounds like you may have crap in the valve body, about the only thing
possibly to try before disassembly is a tranny flush.
