Re: [MBZ] Aux coolant pump teardown pictures.

Walt, thanks for the information. This is keeper stuff.

Harry

Just wanted to let you guys know I'll be making a small run of replacement
impellers for the aux pumps in a week or two.

Got a cad model done up right now, going to push out to the cam program
later today.

The electric motor came right back to life after a good cleaning with the
blowgun/wipeall wipes/etc. Now it's on to finding/making a gasket.

These pumps are quite simple to rebuild if you're mechanically inclined,
only parts that would be hard/impossible to get are the spring and shaft
seal.
Brushes look easy to replace/make also, but mine were good.

If the armature windings are smoked, that's a different story... not sure
if

it can be rewound or if it would indeed be worth it.

Get a new one for peace of mind, but don't toss out the old one, It could
likely be repaired/salvaged.

I'll keep you all up to date as things progress.

Regards,

Walt

I guess I should go dig through my parts cars and pull out all
the aux pumps and see which of them are worth rebuilding.

Do you have an approximate price in mind for the impeller?

Rusty has one on his website for $88 for your model. For my 1987 300TD
it is $55. The only difference is the 78's electrical connector is on a
pigtail and the 87 is on the actual pump.

I don't know how much time and money it will take to make an impeller...
but I'd either find a used one or just get one of the new ones. Then
again, I've got other car projects I want to spend my time on. FWIW, I
just bought three of those pumps for $10 each. So used ones are
definitely out there.

Figured I might as well snap some shots of the R&R session.

Came out of a 78 300D with "green death" coolant, must have been at least
a

teaspoon of scale/crud in it. Was siezed solid.

Still not sure if I can save it, but beats the $100+ for a new one that's
got a plastic housing...

You can see the poor impeller in the second photo... making a new one on
the

cnc machine if the elec motor still has life.
