[MBZ] Best way to test fan clutch

2016-04-03 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Subject says it all. I want to test the fan clutch on the 94 S420.

I'll be Googling, but though I would solicit input here as well.

Thanks,

Dan

Engine off. Compare the amount of force required to turn the fan, cold engine
vs really hot engine (need to read service manual to find the fan engagement
temperature). Should be a higher force, should be noticeable increase in air
flow noise with engine running.

Not very scientific, but will help identify a totally dead clutch.

The test I saw was to roll up a newspaper and stick that into the
back of the fan while the engine is idling. if the fan stops, you
need a new clutch or you need to put the new oil in the clutch.

Mine failed. After putting in the specified amount of 1
centistoke silicone oil, they passed.

2016-04-03 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
This is pretty much what I’m finding.

I don’t know if the clutch is dead, but the youngster says the car is running
hotter after a highway run and he gets onto surface streets. Says it will get
up to about 100C and hang there for a bit.

Ambients are fairly low today (it was 55F this morning when I went on my weekly
grocery run) but should get up to 70F or thereabouts. I’ll catch him when he
returns form a drive and see what it feels like.

Thanks,

Dan

I have a container of the 1 C fluid.

How many days did it take to fill it?

2016-04-03 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes

Visco clutch?

Easy -- fan must be stiff when cold and the engine not running a
while, and spin hard very briefly when started. Must pull hard when
engine is hot enough to need extra cooling -- you should feel lots of
air.

When it should be engaged, shut the engine off while watching the fan
(may need a helper). Fan MUST stop with less than two rotations,
preferably less. If it spins at all, there isn't enough fluid in the
clutch or the operating valve is stuck.

I've always found that a bad clutch is covered with sticky black goo
-- the goo is the silicone fluid and the black is road dirt.

Re: [MBZ] Best way to test fan clutch

2016-04-03 Thread Curly McLain via Mercedes
you drill a hole for a #10 sheet metal screw (or a self tapping
machine screw) in the unfinned center part, away from the bimetal
spring. Pharmacy gave me a 10 cc syringe without a needle. Seems to
me the dose was 16 cc. Shoot that in. Wipe clean. I put locktite
on the screw head and put it on. 3/8" max length for the screw. You
can use a 3/4", but check rotation first before you install the fan.
You can cut off the screw after you make the threads with it. A #12
or 14 screw can be used if you can find one. Nothing smaller than
#10.

I had to remove the bimetal spring and the operating pin to allow air
to vent. Otherwise I could not get the oil in fast enough.

Wire brush or pressure wash the fan out of the car first to remove
the dirt and old grease. Do the fill out of the car.

Yes, the coasting test is another way to check. The dead fan clutch
on my first SDL coasted for a long time after you shut down the
engine. It was winter, so I did not change it right away. The fan
came off and ruined the radiator. Lesson learned

I have a container of the 1 C fluid.

How many days did it take to fill it?

That reminds me, if you can move the blade tip fore / aft more than half an
inch, the bearing is bad and a new clutch is required.

How much does a new one cost? I never replaced a 123 fan clutch since my
first one in 1986.. OTOH, the 108 and 109 sedans and 111 coupe all needed
a new fan clutch.

Some of them are getting scarce and expensive. The W140 clutch can be found
amor Behr (OEM) for around $100.
