Re: [MBZ] Calling Pete Arnold: WAS: Camper / travel trailer or caravan slideout

2012-09-03 Thread G Mann
If you own a camper or motorhome with slideouts, carry an ample supply of
lithium spray grease and keep everything slick or your days of satisfaction
are numbered, and you are vulnerable.

BTDT. Driving to the nearest RV shop down busy highways with the slide
stuck and hanging halfway out into oncoming traffic... not pretty. Slide
stuck, motor burned out, no viable recovery on site.

On mine ('97 Alpenlite 5th. Wheel) it is mechanical, not hydraulic. I'm by
no means an expert, but I think this is typical. There is a rack on the
underside of the slider and that presumably engages a gear motor. There is
also a manual backup in the form of a hex drive accessed through a port on
 the curbside.

A question made for Pete Arnold

I have been asked for advice on a trailer slideout. Why me? I guess
because I work on my own cars, therefore I must know about all
 automotive like stuff.

Anyway - I don't. Know everything. Actually, I know very little about
these camper or travel trailers [caravans]. I believe the slide out
sections are hydraulic. Is the system
durable? What about roof and wall leaks at the joint? Is
there a manual backup to the (presumably) electric control?
Are there other questions I should be asking?

So I'm hope someone on this amazing list is familiar with these and can
make me smart enough to give good advise. *smiles*
