We only use Halo now for Miss Meg’s auxiliary animal shelter (both for the cats and the dog). NO gas, they eat less of it, and cleaning out the box is MUCH less onerous than before. I have fed Iams or Science diet for a long, long time. Cats are obligate carnivores, the more meat and "byproducts" -- guts and trimmings, mostly -- there is is the food the better. They cannot digest corn or rice meal very well, and if those things are a major ingredient, they will have stinky poop, often serious diarrhea as well. Good stuff costs more, but they eat less and are healthier. Don't try to change your story now. Cats are far more descriminating than people about what they eat, so cat food is much higher quality and people can crave it and get addicted. You probably haven't heard about the man who got addicted and stayed out all night chasing pussy cats and yowling in peoples back yards until one night when he was sitting on a fence. He leaned over to lick his tail, fell off, and broke his neck. Sampling cat food can be dangerous. Gerry On 4/16/2014 7:56 PM, Andrew Strasfogel wrote: You thought I was serious?? Re: [MBZ] Cat Food
Well, my cats always seem to live nearly forever on Science diet, it's much better than most of the other stuff out there (more fat, for instance, and very little cereal, which cats cannot digest). My Canadian cat lived to within two months of 19 years, and our wild cat made 16. My two siamese made it to 14 and 15, and all of them died from either feline leukemia, cancer, or hyperthyrodism, none of which are related to food supply. Never an issue with palatability, never any problems with digestion. Healthy, happy kitties until the thyroid burned them up. Re: [MBZ] Cat Food
head slap We put ours on Blue Buffalo when it came out. Before that we used Eukanuba, but in hindsight, it's really crappy food. One of the ways they (IAMS) mess with the ingredients is to weigh the proteins before dehydration, which, of course, grossly skews the actual content. Right after the protein you start seeing the by-products, which is a bad sign as well. Science Diet cat food always had a bad rap amongst breeders because they use corn gluten as a major ingredient, which is tough for cats to digest. They also like to use brewers rice as well, another ingredient that's tough on kitty's digestive tract. Some of the worst stuff out there is sold by the largest companies. What you want to look for is the first three or four ingredients - there should be no filler grains. The main protein should not be a by-product. Using these criteria you'll find that most of the major cat food suppliers are selling crap. The has been a movement afoot in the cat fancy to go with the raw diet. I spoke to a couple of vets about it, and they were pretty vehement that it was a bad deal. Their biggest concern was that there is a lot of nasty stuff living in raw food, and handling it creates an even larger risk of contamination.
