We only use Halo now for Miss Meg’s auxiliary animal shelter (both for the cats
and the dog). NO gas, they eat less of it, and cleaning out the box is MUCH

awesome for its clumping qualities. I spray deodorizer that is supposed to

Andrew,

How badly does the cat "waste" smell with that food?

SWMBO recently switched our two cats to Iams brand, and cleaning up the cat box
is a much much more pleasant experience now.

Don't try to change your story now. Cats are far more descriminating
than people about what they eat, so cat food is much higher quality and
people can crave it and get addicted. You probably haven't heard about
the man who got addicted and stayed out all night chasing pussy cats and
yowling in peoples back yards until one night when he was sitting on a
fence. He leaned over to lick his tail, fell off, and broke his neck.

Find a vet who sells Hills/Science Diet/Prescription cat food.  The girl
at the desk might be able to help you pick a non-fattening  dry food you
can leave out 24/7 for kitty to eat when he's hungry.  Next time you
take kitty to the vet, explain your problem and he/she can set you up on
the best complete diet for kitty.
It's a little more expensive, but cheaper in the long run since kitty
will be healthier.

Re: [MBZ] Cat Food

2014-04-14 Thread Peter Frederick
Well, my cats always seem to live nearly forever on Science diet, it's
much better than most of the other stuff out there (more fat, for
instance, and very little cereal, which cats cannot digest).

My Canadian cat lived to within two months of 19 years, and our wild
cat made 16. My two siamese made it to 14 and 15, and all of them
died from either feline leukemia, cancer, or hyperthyrodism, none of
which are related to food supply.

Never an issue with palatability, never any problems with digestion.

Healthy, happy kitties until the thyroid burned them up.

Re: [MBZ] Cat Food

We put ours on Blue Buffalo when it came out. Before that we used Eukanuba,
but in hindsight, it's really crappy food. One of the ways they (IAMS) mess
with the ingredients is to weigh the proteins before dehydration, which, of
course, grossly skews the actual content. Right after the protein you start
seeing the by-products, which is a bad sign as well.

Science Diet cat food always had a bad rap amongst breeders because they use
corn gluten as a major ingredient, which is tough for cats to digest. They also
like to use brewers rice as well, another ingredient that's tough on kitty's
digestive tract.

Some of the worst stuff out there is sold by the largest companies. What you
want to look for is the first three or four ingredients - there should be no
filler grains. The main protein should not be a by-product.

Using these criteria you'll find that most of the major cat food suppliers are
selling crap.

extra for filler? PetCo and other fine pet retailers will carry a full line
of GOOD pet food. We're currently feeding Buster Halo Spots Stew although
I can't remember which one exactly. Its a 4 star

food. Very few controversial ingredients (unlike Science Diet) and most
 importantly he likes it...

When we got our first cat, the vet told us the best food for it was raw
hamburger. The cat got a little now and then, but mostly made up for the
lack with mice and birds.

Eukanuba, but in hindsight, it's really crappy food. One of the ways they
(IAMS) mess with the ingredients is to weigh the proteins before
dehydration, which, of course, grossly skews the actual content. Right
after the protein you start seeing the by-products, which is a bad sign as
 well.

Science Diet cat food always had a bad rap amongst breeders because they
use corn gluten as a major ingredient, which is tough for cats to digest.
They also like to use brewers rice as well, another ingredient that's tough
 on kitty's digestive tract.

Some of the worst stuff out there is sold by the largest companies. What
you want to look for is the first three or four ingredients - there should
be no filler grains. The main protein should not be a by-product.

Using these criteria you'll find that most of the major cat food suppliers
 are selling crap.

The has been a movement afoot in the cat fancy to go with the raw diet. I spoke
to a couple of vets about it, and they were pretty vehement that it was a bad
deal. Their biggest concern was that there is a lot of nasty stuff living in
raw food, and handling it creates an even larger risk of contamination.

The best food for cats is live mice. Hard to feed reliably, though.

Last time I looked, the Science Diet I was feeding was low on cereal
products, but it's been a while. We are currently cat free unless you
count the rather well fed looking one wandering around in the yard
eating birds.

And hard to avoid worms, too, unless your cat (like the one we had when
we were south of Calhan, Colorado) wises up after being taken to the vet
so many times to be de-wormed and stops eating the intestines -- after a
certain point in time, we started seeing bottom halves of mice laying
around outside and never had to de-worm her again.

She also killed 5 weasels and chased two skunks out from under our
little mobile home on the prairie without getting sprayed.

You trying to rile me or what? Go post some more off topic drivel and then
complain that the list is filled with off topic stuff.

The ingredients list for Science Diet tells the story, did you follow the link?
I suspect the vets sell what gives them a good margin. Look at all the free
giveaway stuff at the vet, its all Hills branded. The vets are corporate shills
the same way your pill pushing doctor is a corporate shill. I told my doctor
that when he tried to put me on a cholesterol med right after saying well your
cholesterol numbers are normal. I don't see that doc anymore.

ROFL!!!.and where is any real documentation for the claims you make
about cat food?  Vets sell more Hills/Science than any other kind and
they are the ones who suffer if a clients pet doesn't do well.  Spots
Stew?,  Dog Advisor?  Poor Buster!

Besides that, dogs are much different than cats as everyone knows.  You
didn't see the BLM sicking cats on the protestors in Nevada and trying
to destroy the innocent rancher Bundy just to give his ranch to the
Chinese, now did you?

In addition, why are you even considering buying a Toyota pickup when
you have such a low opinion of Toyota Prius'?

Gerrywhose cats spent their whole lives eating Hills cat food and
happily lived to a ripe old age.

IIRC it was Hurst that got me on to looking at ratings for the various foods.
There are a few different sites that rate foods but they're pretty consistent.

We used the Dick Van Patton stuff for awhile, can't remember why we stopped.
PetCo has a lady there on weekends giving away samples which are great for
training treats.
Buster ate an ant trap at camp last fall and for some reason it put him off
Solid Gold so we started with the Halo which he really likes.
