Re: [MBZ] Diesel Slot Cars

Traxxas RC’s are relatively durable and reliable. I have a 1/16 Traxxas Mini
E-Revo VXL Brushless that is quite fun with its instant acceleration and
massive wheelies. The brushed version I had was easier to handle and nearly the
same top end speed. A company called RPM makes many “unbreakable” parts that
have a lifetime guarantee including suspension arms, axle bearing carriers,
bulkheads etc. I’ve only ever broken a bumper, and rendered a suspension arm
unusable since the hinge pin was bent so bad that it couldn’t be removed.

PS. I hope it’s ready by 6/16 (240D day!

Solid balsa models are best for first time RC fliers - they last longer,
take less to repair, but are heavier and don't perform as well. After it's
totaled, then move on to the built-up models.

Count me among the nostalgic model car guys. I used to dream about that
stuff growing up overseas and pored over the few RC magazines available to
me. Never had the funds to buy one though.

Recently a guy at a local model shop built up an old aluminum plate chassis
2wd off road car with a 0.15 OSMax motor, vintage muffler, clutch and
drivetrain. He put a clear plastic ford ranger body on it. I thought no
childhood is really complete without one, so I splurged on it. The kids
have electric 1/16 traxxas cars so we run them around the yard.

The gasser will pretty much flip over backwards if I get on it too hard.
Pretty hard to start the motor by modern traxxas standards. Have to get the
carb set just right. Turns 18k rpms I think. Sounds like a weed eater but
angrier. The tires balloon out at speed providing a cvt type effect on flat
ground. It goes faster than I dare drive it. I would like to set up an FPV
camera on it.

We are also in the middle of a balsa/paper ww1 biplane kit build and will
likely throw a low power electric rc setup on it just to say we did it. We
have a simulator so I am making the kids get competent on that so they dont
splat the thing right away.

Right now, I have two different RC trucks with glow engines. The Traxxas nitro
stampede has a .20 in.³ or 3.3cc engine, and the team associated RC10GT2 has a
.15 in.³ or 2.5cc. they are both screamers! The stampede originally had a .15
engine, and the upgrade to the 3.3cc more than tripled the horsepower! It can
be geared to run straight line speeds of over 100 mph as a friend of mine set
his up, but mine Has stock gearing, so it would probably do around 65 mph.

My collection of model engines include .010, .020, .049, .15, .29, .35
in^3. The .010 is spec'd to turn over 40,000 RPMs. IIRC, the .29 is a real
spark engine, with a plug, points, coil, condenser, etc.

I have heard them called semi-diesels.

I flew control-line model airplanes with a 0.35 in^3 engine and an 8 - 10"
prop.

In college, I build a radio-controlled airplane with a 0.74 in^3 engine
with a 12 - 14" prop. Unfortunately, the radio was on Citizen Band. One

Nope, not compression engines - the glow plug keeps glowing once the engine
is started - keeps igniting the fuel/air mixture. The true compression
model airplane engines had wicked high compression and were hard to start.

Re: [MBZ] Diesel Slot Cars

2020-05-19 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
We had a couple of the Chapparals that we ran in straight line runs, too. You
set up the lines in a “Y” with the top of the “Y” at the end to act as a brake
or catch. Would run them side by side. We had a blacktop driveway that was a
half court basketball court in front of a three car garage, plenty of room, but
not terribly flat. When we ran them in circles like you describe they would
bounce around and often turn over.

It was still fun, though. I remember the “fork” connector on the 6V battery for
the glow plugs.

I had a PT-19 plane that was held together with rubber bands. Auger in, flies
apart, a couple minutes and some new rubber bands and you’re back in the air.
Fun!

I had some of those cars, still have them in a box somewhere.  A Cox
Chapparal and some sort of Sprite Indy car I got for bottle caps from
Sprite soda (I force fed the stuff to my friends, my mother finally gave
in and took the ones I had and sent them with some money and got me the
car).  Might have had a coupla others, I can't remember, or built some
using bits from other ones.  My cousin and I used old toy cars and
trucks, salvaged the wheels off them and made propeller-driven cars
using the airplane engines, those were kinda cool, totally
uncontrollable though.  They had .049 glow plug engines that I guess
were 2 cycle diesel (compression) engines, the glow plug was only used
to start them. Fuel was methanol and castor oil (which burned clear and
hot, singed my hand many times).  There were lots of other sizes,
including some fairly large ones.

I rode my bike to the school in the neighborhood toting my kit, it had a
big paved playground, would pound in a nail, get about 15ft of some good
nylon string, the car had a harness on it, run the string between the
nail and the car, start it up, and it would run like hell around and
around until it ran out of fuel.  Noisy too.

My antics would piss off the old ladies who lived near the school, a
coupla times they came out and yelled at me and once they called the
cops.  A cop came and took great interest in my activity, was asking all
kinds of questions, said he would deal with the old lady, keep having
fun.  My dad told me to ignore them too.  Yay me.

I had airplanes too, they never flew that well, and I would get dizzy
flying them on the control line.

I always wore a suit and tie while running the cars, I was quite propuh...

Re: [MBZ] Diesel Slot Cars

2020-05-18 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
I spent a few years in the 90’s racing electric slot cars. The track owner
developed a clicker setup mounted to the bottom motor screw. It used an
adjustable bracket to mount a strip of thick Lexan bent at the end that made
contact with the main drive gear. The whole setup would vibrate, and the
opposite end of the strip would resonate against the Lexan body for even more
noise. This allowed me to distinguish the sound of my car from the others.
After a race or two, the worn part of the strip could be trimmed off,
readjusted and re-bent to click loudly once again. It was a true work of art,
and it made the world of slot car racing accessible to me!
