Re: [MBZ] E420 problems
Subject: Re: [MBZ] E420 problems 3. When first driven when cold, the transmission won't shift from 1 to 2 unless the engine is revved above 3,000 RPM. I'd rather not have to make it go that fast immediately and would prefer the trailing-throttle upshifts it does after it's been driven a little while. If like my '92 300e there is a switchover valve above the brake booster. For testing purposes, you can unplug this and see if the 1st gear hold is temporarily disabled. [MBZ] E420 problems
Well, now that I FINALLY got the E420 registered I have some problems to fix before we can drive it much. 1. There is a power steering fluid leak when the car is sitting. The power steering pump sure complains when the fluid level is down. I put ATF in it, having nothing else and having to drive to Santa Fe to get the car registered. 2. There is a gasoline leak somewhere. Since I can detect a few fumes when I run the HVAC system while driving, I presume it's in the engine compartment. Rusty mentioned some valve, but I don't remember what he called it. 3. When first driven when cold, the transmission won't shift from 1 to 2 unless the engine is revved above 3,000 RPM. I'd rather not have to make it go that fast immediately and would prefer the trailing-throttle upshifts it does after it's been driven a little while. 4. There's a rock hole in the left headlight lens. Did someone mention plugging such with silicone caulk? How about a small piece of clear packing tape? 5. There's a hole in the right front turn signal/marker lens. Kaleb, do you have any of those? 6. Is it possible to run the HVAC system to get the same results as the manual W123/240D system, with warm air out the footwells and cool air out the upper vents? On a sunny, winter day, with a warm coat on, that's what is really needed. If anyone has any suggestions, please speak up! Normal.transmission/engine is programmed this way to allow warmup of the Cats. 4. There's a rock hole in the left headlight lens. Did someone mention plugging such with silicone caulk? 4. There's a rock hole in the left headlight lens. Did someone mention plugging such with silicone caulk? How about a small piece of clear packing tape? Tape won't hold up, and RTV is pretty weak stuff. Try Shoe Goo. Speaking of that, today I decided to do something about the rock pip I'd found in the left high-beam headlight after Jill's off-road ad- venture. New headlight? Well, you'd think so, but that's just not my way. There was water inside the glass so I pointed a heater at it and taped a straw to the air compressor to heat the lens and run air into it to evaporate the water. I then removed the lamp and shook it to get all the tiny glass chips out the little hole in the front, except for the two big chips that couldn't come through such a small hole. I then rattled them around until I got the big chip back into its crater, then I squirted Shoe Goo in to seal the hole and glue the chip more-or-less back into place. I placed the headlamp face-down to let the glue set up. The other chip can just rattle around loose in there. We'll see how it goes. I hate waste, even to the point of repairing a stupid cheap USDOT headlamp! -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
