AK is packed with the rare earth stuff. It was mined and refined vigorously
during WWI and WWII. Nobody is mining it now. Since it is found with other
things that are being mined, the ore (gold/platinum/copper) gets processed in
Canada or in US, and the tailings/slag (which holds all those rare elements)
gets shoveled onto slow boats to China, which refines the REA, and sells them
back to us for big $$$.

Maybe when the China ore is played out, USA will bother to build a
refining/smelting facility. Our defenses depend heavily on these elements, far
more than having self driving cars.

The desert southwest is lousy with rare earth metals. However, since we quit
making more atom bombs, there is zero American company interest in mining any
of them, and we don't even make much tool steel any more to encourage vanadium
mining.

All part of the 50 years of de-industrialization we have been indulging in.

Eventually the Chinese or Russians will come and mine them for free.

Not necessarily true. There have been efforts to re-establish uranium mining in
and around the Grand Canyon of late. It’s stirred up quite a bit a trouble with
the locals, understandably so.

That’s one of the reasons why you can’t use groundwater around there for
drinking purposes if you’re out in the wilds - it’s most likely got uranium and
arsenic in it.
