I still have one of the stickers they sent with the replacement speedos that
says something to the effect of even though this speedo registers up to 120
doesn't mean the car will go that fast.

Every US bound model from the 240D to 380SEL in both '81 '82 had this
speedo Federally required! Interesting car though. One of my Mercedes
books has a pic of a W126 AMG sedan, in the same monotone white!
I think I prefer the look of the 4-door with the AMG body kit over the
coupe myself.

This SEC would look way better if they lost the pin striping put the
amber indicators back on the front of the car though.

So the Claybrook speedometer was mandated in 1980 as we were busy kicking her
and Jimmy Carter out of DC, and her replacement repealed it before anybody
started making 1983 cars?

Re: [MBZ] Expensive 240D speedo

2013-06-24 Thread Chris James

Here's an interesting article which discusses the short lived 85MPH
speedometer.

Speedometer top speed often exceeds reality

A brief quote from the AP article on Yahoo:

Claybrook concedes there's no data to show the 85 mph limit saved
lives, but she believes it did. She calls the ever-higher speedometer
numbers immoral.

http://news.yahoo.com/speedometer-top-speed-often-exceeds-150136959.html

Mercedes didn't wait for a redesign. The speedometers on all cars were
all changed back to their previous limits for the '83MY! Silly to think
you can make people drive better or safer by lowering speed limits or
speedometer numbers!

Chrysler waited until the chassis were replaced.
My 1989 Plymouth Horizon had an 85mph speedo, which, IIRC, was a good indicator
of when to shift out of 3rd gear. Would do somewhere around 110-113 in both 4th
and 5th (well above or below the power peak), with the needle pointed straight
down, way off scale. I suppose if Chrysler cared they could have gone back to
the 1978-80 speedos on the Omni and Horizon.
