Re: [MBZ] Failed Emissions Inspection
having a 93 E300 2.8 that just failed emissions in NJ. Is there any way to check a catalytic converter to see if it is working or not? I am about to check for vacume leaks and change the 02 sensor. While I am at it is there any preliminary checks I can do? Re: [MBZ] Failed Emissions Inspection
There is no self diagnostic function on the catalytic converter, easy thing is to plug your car into a computer and see what the go is. You can spend 's on replacing stuff, only to find that a wire was loose somewhere. The series 124's have quite a sophisticated self diagnostic system and overall it is more cost effective to pay a equipped Merc workshop to analyze your car, rather than spending money on replacing serviceable parts. Perhaps Rusty could let you know how much a cat for your car is. Generally if everything else checks out fine, then the catalytic converter is thought to be the trouble of high emissions. I take it you are running the correct grade of fuel for your car? Robb Taglieri wrote: having a 93 E300 2.8 that just failed emissions in NJ. Re: [MBZ] Failed Emissions Inspection
Robb, the air pump only operates for a short time when the engine is cold so that shouldn't be an issue if your MB is really warmed up at the time of the test. It's always a good idea to be sure the engine is very warm for a emissions test. John On 9/17/07, Robb Taglieri [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I have a 1993 300E 2.8 with about 122,000 miles on it. Also want to mention that for the first 30 seconds or so I get a tistt, tistt sound from the air pump. After 20 -30 seconds it just stops making the noise. It is not a gradual fade but an instant turn off of the noise. I'm not sure if one is related to the other. Robb T. High HC means unburned fuel---the engine is running too rich. A lot of things can cause this, but the first to check for is a vacuum leak---could be as simple as a disconnected line somewhere. (Low vacuum makes the injection computer think you're stomping on the accelerator all the time, so it dumps more gas in than necessary.) A bad thermostat, or bad engine temp sensor would leave the engine running rich if it thinks it is still warming up. On cold (rare) days at the smog place, I will request they remove the roll around fan as it can knock temperatures down some. I would consider changing out the O2 sensor, which if original, is probably due. If you have a previous history of the car running very rich, the catalytic converter could be shot too. Never go to an emissions test with a full tank of gas. The purge cannister could be venting raw gas into the engine.
