My dream is that technological breakthroughs will lead to ever more clever ways to harness the power of the sun (photovoltaics), foster energy conservation, and reduce emissions from the use of fossil fuels. There are even some intriguing developments in nuclear power that were unforeseeable a decade ago. Nuclear power may be our best option in the forseeable future. We really need to figure out what to do with the waste, though. Some combination of reprocessing and Yucca Mountain-style storage will probably be the best bet.

Re: [MBZ] Favorable A-Class Review
Why the fascination with hydrogen-fueled vehicles? There is no infrastructure to support refueling, their mileage is worse than that of battery-powered cars, and they are an environmental scam. What, a scam? But they put out pure water as exhaust! Yes, they are a scam from the vantage of low pollution. Current commercial hydrogen production presently derives from fossil fuels. No environmental advantage there. Large scale production of hydrogen of the sort needed to fuel our country's vehicles would need to be done by electrolysis; this means consuming more electricity in the production than the hydrogen will release when used as fuel. The electricity, with our current stationary energy infrastructure, will be produced in large part by burning coal, the dirtiest fuel around. So hydrogen is a fuel which is immaculately clean in its consumption, but dirty in its production. Hydrogen would be a dandy intermediary (after the mileage and refueling infrastructure issues are addressed) on that glorious day when our stationary electrical production derives from wind, solar and geothermal sources rather than coal, but until that day, biodiesel is a much more attractive alternative fuel. The connection between hydrogen fuel, electricity consumption and fossil fuels goes a long way towards explaining why Big Oil and Enron toadies like Bush and Schwarzenegger are pimping hydrogen as the answer, IMO.
