I have a standing reward of $10,000 for the Navy pilot that can verify they
shot down McCain over N. Vietnam, post the Forestall.
I've spoken personally with the man who was air boss for that ship, on that
day, and his version of what happened and the Navy's version does not jive,
at all..
McCain had some serious baggage over that event.

Young John McCain had a lot of that. Having flag officers in the family 
may have reinforced it.


Led to popularity with friends and girls (and graduation at the bottom 
of his class) as a Cadet, led to a couple of written off planes (and 
IIRC an Italian powerline) in training.


Some say it led to his becoming a POW. But I discount that a bit, I 
can't imagine any military pilot skipping the SAM avoidance drills while 
flying over enemy AA batteries because "they can't hit me".

odds of surviving a 20 year career was 75%.  1/4 of naval aviators would die 
prior to reaching retirement.  Those are pretty steep odds for a voluntary 
force, in peace time.
