> by electrical/electronic engineering standards none of it should work and it > was full of feedback loops, etc, He's not wrong. Car wiring only worked because it (used to be) pretty darned insensitive. Anything less than a Watt moving around didn't really do anything in 1956; electrics, not electronics. The antenna wiring of the radio was pretty critical, but also was separate, and quite direct. Otherwise, if it didn't light an incandescent lamp, or turn a motor, it 'didn't happen'. Of course, _now_ cars are _full_ of sensitive electronics... -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] Glow plug relay
Bad grounds can do all sorts of odd things! My Dad refused to work on automotive electrical stuff, said by electrical/electronic engineering standards not of it should work and it was full of feedback loops, etc, and that was before 1976. Glad it was something simple and easy to fix. My latest electrical gremlin was a bad connector on the low beam on the left side of my Golf. Bad contact had overheated it, and it was making intermittent contact on top of the connector being stuck. Also had a issue with the right turn signal front bulb not flashing, bulb is good. Fixed the connector by reshaping it after prying the da..d thing off and getting it installed properly (PO screwed it up, or whoever replaced the lamp last), and now the right turn signal works perfectly….. Gotta love common ground electrical circuits. Almost as much fun as un-soldered “pressure” grounds in stereo equipment! I would guess the ground wire is only grounding the small electronics in the relay so the wire does not need to be much more than 16 gauge. The 12 Volts goes through the relay to the glow plugs and then through the glow plugs directly to engine ground -- which is tied to the chassis with a large braided jumper and does not go through the ground of the relay. It would be a good idea to check the strap grounding the engine to the frame. I may have missed it, but did you confirm there's actually power at the relay? In other words, put a meter between the (supposed) 12V feed and a ground point such as the engine or negative battery terminal. I don't remember if the W124 relays have a strip fuse like the W116 and later W123 relays... I don't recall what year/model this is regarding but the ground points in my car are where the brown wires attach to the chassis. I'd try removing and cleaning any in the vicinity of the relay. They are all probably similarly oxidized, if one is bad the others are probably not far behind. Exactly. The cheap old-fashioned test light works very very well for this purpose, and is easy to use. It's a screwdriver-ey looking thing with an awl point, and an alligator clip wire coming out its ass end. There is a 1A light bulb in the handle. The brightness of the light tells you how good a connection you have. (Compare with the brightness when probing across the car's battery.) The awl point slips easily in to most sockets. The usual MB connectors can be un-shelled, carefully, and individual wires removed at need. (Typical glow-plug hack: removing the purple wire from the connector and taping it off. Thus inducing after-glow. Reduces the life of the glow plugs, but makes for a smoother, less smoky cold-start idle.) Or, remove the shell top and probe the exposed connectors in-circuit. Just be careful not to misplace any of the contacts! -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Dimitri. The cover of the 5/6 pin connector is just clipped on, it is removable. N.B. The cover keeps the connector pins and wires in place, make sure to keep them in order. Simple test for ground. Using a turn signal bulb in a socket with two wires. One wire to Pos on battery, the other to Ground in the socket. If the bulb lights brightly, the connection is capable of passing a couple of amps, therefore good enough to power the relay. A meter will only tell you if there is any connection, not if it will pass enough current to work. If I have misunderstood your question, I apologise. Re: [MBZ] Glow plug relay
I went out this morning to get Brunnhilde running, jiggled and manipulated the GPR, could feel it clicking when I turned the key, after a couple of squeezings of the connector, she fired up fine. I guess the connector had just come loose and wasn't juicing the GPs. It is a silver box attached to the steering column, there are a couple of other similar-looking silver boxes to the left, not sure what they do. Thanks for the info from all! BTW, a transporter is coming tomorrow to load the Benz and the Eldo for transport to SC. I had a service arranged to pick them up today or tomorrow (All American Auto Transport), the guy called me Monday and said he would be there in 10 minutes. That was an issue as I was not anywhere near there as the AAAT agent apparently told him they were to be delivered today or tomorrow, not picked up. So anyway, I found another transport company through my movers, BJ Interstate Auto Transport run by a woman named Beverly ( the BJ of the company name), and in about 2 hours she had organized a pickup for tomorrow morning by a guy who hauls Shelby(ie?)s around a lot, and other fancy rides. Great service. This AAAT has all kinds of bad experiences, should have done some research, now I have to try to get my deposit back, sigh. --R Jim Cathey wrote: I believe the 2 silver boxes are the GPR and the CC Amp. IIRC, the CC Amp is attached to the steering column while the GPR is not. (I hope that's correct) The other easy way to tell is look for the one with wires on it that can take 60A of current. Re: [MBZ] Glow plug relay
Glow plug fuse OK, no voltage to it. The fuse is only separate from the relay itself on the early series plug systems, where the relay is right under the steering column. It's a big fat silver sucker, and has a very heavy wire coming off it. -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
Re: [MBZ] Glow plug relay
I gotta go deal with that today, the realtor photo person is coming to take piccies of the house, for some reason the realtor was really averse to having Brunnhilde sitting out front and being in the piccies. She made me move my old Caddy out of the driveway too, That won't look good to potential buyers. Fortunately the rent house across the street is vacant for a couple more weeks, so Elwood is gracing that driveway. WTF is this world coming to? --R Jim Cathey wrote: Glow plug fuse OK, no voltage to it. Re: [MBZ] Glow plug relay
Brunnhilde is dim, fuse is OK, does not look like volts getting to it though, so suggests glow plug relay? Which of those little boxes is the GP relay (under the dash I am assuming)? Most were not under the dash. Only the early key-start versions of cars that had pull knobs. Series-plug cars, in other words. Those are big boxes right under the steering column. The parallel plug systems have their relays on the inside fender.
