Paul, Go to www.car-parts.com http://www.car-parts.com/ (no affiliation) and search for a used parts source for the half axles. The service manual advised to replace the axle retaining clips in the differential. They are part number 115 994 04 34. You'll need a floor jack to lower the differential for some wiggle room to free the axle. You might find it useful to look at the write up on CV boot replacement even if you are not going to do that. There has been a lot of discussion in the past about the poor quality of rebuilt rear half axles for the W123 series. I am now facing the task of replacing both rear halves on my 85 300TD Wagon. Until I am able to locate a good used set, there a stop gap measure? Is there a silicone or rubber spray I can use to seal the CV boots? What say you? Anyone have a good set lying around? What's wrong with them? I got a set at a junkyard for I think $60 each (not sure if that was a good price or not) and have to replace mine soon. They are heavy to ship if you find some from a lister, or just hit an automotive recycling facility. --R Paul Raheb wrote: There has been a lot of discussion in the past about the poor quality of rebuilt rear half axles for the W123 series. Re: [MBZ] Half Axle Replacements (W123)
If its only the boots gone bad, replace the boots now. Your axles will likely run on for a long time if the boots are on ly starting to go and the axles are not badly worn. Otherwise, try to find axles from a junker, and it may be worthwhile to put new boots on them while they are out. Dieselvolk, I'll second and third the motion to get a used original from a recycler. When I needed one, my Indie was able to procure a used one for $125; still going strong about 30k miles later, and I expect it will last another 100k miles at least.
