[MBZ] He Has the Passport for this Car
https://lasvegas.craigslist.org/cto/d/las-vegas-1973-mercedes-benz-220/7758564720.html I'd look at this if I was in Vegas. I don't recall ever seeing a black one. This black surely isn't 040 is it? The ask is mind numbing but these are becoming scarce, so I had best get used to it. That’s sweet. Needs pics of the engine compartment and trunk with the rubber mat lifted up to check for corrosion. I don’t know these that well, but comparing to something like a finnie in comparable condition, I don’t think his ask is too outrageous. I think $7500 would be a solid price, but if that’s original miles, certainly more. I wonder if it has AC? Does your “No black cars” mandate apply here? -D > On Jun 20, 2024, at 10:14 AM, Bob Rentfro via Mercedes > wrote: > > https://lasvegas.craigslist.org/cto/d/las-vegas-1973-mercedes-benz-220/7758564720.html > > I'd look at this if I was in Vegas. I'd be willing to invoke a special dispensation on the no black car rule on this since it would not be a daily driver. It's probably a good thing it is up in Lost Wages. Re: [MBZ] He Has the Passport for this Car
If it had AC would it be a dealer add-on under-dash unit? I don't see that but the photos don't really give a clear view. Or were they integrating AC by 1973? I normally like black cars but I don't care for the black with the blood red interior. Looks like Count Dracula's coffin. Quite a fetching combination... I don't consider the ask too bad considering its 51 years old. Re: [MBZ] He Has the Passport for this Car
I keep seeing a guy drive by my house every day in a classic orange Beetle convertible, likely a 1969 or 1968 from the looks of it. Beautiful car, makes that lovely “ping-ping-ping” sound when it’s timed just right. Someone down the street had a Beetle for sale recently. It was a little beat, but appeared solid. Can’t imagine driving one in the winters around here, other than for the traction. Certainly not for the heat… -D > On Jun 20, 2024, at 1:13 PM, Curt Raymond via Mercedes > wrote: > > Quite a fetching combination... > > I don't consider the ask too bad considering its 51 years old. Re: [MBZ] He Has the Passport for this Car
My first car was a Beetle. Bought it at age 16, probably overpaid but I loved them at the time. I really liked the simplicity of it, but yeah, heat was very minimal. Enough to keep the frost off the windshield if everything was working perfectly, otherwise you kept a scraper handy. Re: [MBZ] He Has the Passport for this Car
Requirement in my family that your first car had to be a Beetle. Unfortunately (?) for me, there weren’t any decent ones around when the time came and my Dad got a nice deal on a 1970 2-door Maverick that was a total stripper. “Three on the tree,” heater and AM radio, which of course I dealt with immediately with my removable slide mount Radio Shack under dash cassette player, an amp and some surface mount speakers for the parcel shelf. I totaled it about 6 months later and got a Beetle convertible. -D > On Jun 20, 2024, at 2:36 PM, Allan Streib wrote: > > My first car was a Beetle. When we moved here in February of 1982, we were a single car family: a 1977 Malibu. I started working instantly (2300hrs to 0700hrs shift at a Circle K). As I searched for a better gig, Mrs. Bob nailed down a job as a hostess at a Bob’s Big Boy. Suddenly, we needed two vehicles. I bought a ‘68 Beetle (Blanche…the only car I ever named) that needed a fender replaced. $175 and I had a fender in my shed. Started driving Blanche ilate at night then early in the morning so it wasn’t too bad. After being robbed almost every other at the Circle K, I began working at the City of Phoenix Wastewater Treatment Plant. I was able to drive on dirt roads among the irrigated fields to and from the plant so Blanche didn’t mind that she was air cooled. I very seldom drove her in town in the summer. Blanche served me well until a stop sign runner clipped me, spun out, and landed shiny side down in a flowing irrigation canal. Dude got out, wife was stuck in the car. I helped him get her ginormous carcass out of the submerged car, they stood there and stared at me, then ran (or waddled) off. I pulled/beat the left front fender back into a shape that I could limp home and I did. I parted was with Blanche, for $275, and got my ‘62 Falcon. Took my pregnant, water broke wife (first one) to the hospital at 3 am in a 1966 VW1300. Strangely, I have no memory of the journey, only the setting off and the arriving. Weird. Fred.
