That's how the online GSA Auctions work. They do have a weakness,
however. I suppose you could make the smallest incremental bid
repetitively over several hours which would cause the auction to end
in the wee hours of the morning when no one else was awake or
motivated enough to bid against you.

For online parts auctions, it would be good if the item remained
listed for months instead of days. List a Buy-it-Now and accept
offers. I have at least a hundred items that I would gladly trade for
cash well under what a new one would cost, but which are too obscure
to put on eBay in hopes someone who needs it looks it up in the next
couple days.

Do you think the auction format is still the best? I always thought a
neat alternative to eBay, to get rid of the sniping type behavior, would
be to have the auction end time be flexible, like in a real auction.
That is, each time a bid comes in, the end of the auction is extended by
some minutes. Only once no bids have been received for some amount of
time would the gavel be dropped and the item sold.

But for parts, I'm not sure an auction makes sense. There may not be
enough interest in any particular part to get an acceptable price by
bidding. In this case a fixed price (maybe with a option to make a
lower offer but this would not be binding on the seller to accept) might
  be better.

CL is just online classifieds right? AFAIK they don't give sellers any
tools and buyers are not registered at all.

That's certainly simple especially compared to ebay; is there some
middle ground that would be prefereable from a seller's standpoint? I
assume some way to have an idea of other seller's past experience with a

eBay doesn't have to improve their business model, or worry about

I'm with you. I posted my '82 300D on eBay about a month ago, and it
was immediately bid up to my reserve price by a guy in Austin. I
thought why would a guy in Austin bid on this car? but he had quite
a history and a 100% approval rating, so I was pretty comfortable
with it.

Comes the end of the auction, and in the last minute the guy is
outbid by one dollar by a new user with no bid history and no rating.
And of course he reneged on the deal, citing a family emergency.

I did some sleuthing, and found out the second bidder is from Austin,
too -- what a coincidence! I sent an email to both guys accusing
them of being the same person and got no response from either.

In a nutshell, the first bidder (the one with the history) sells cars
similar to the one I was selling, so he essentially took mine off the
market by bidding it up, then got out of the deal by using his second
account to outbid himself. I had to wait through eBay's mandated time
periods (a total of about three weeks) before I could get my account
credited -- I'm sure glad the credit card they have on file for me is
expired, or they would have sucked their commission out of my account
and it would have taken me even longer to get a refund.

And there is absolutely no way to complain about this guy. As Kaleb
so eloquently put it, sellers have no recourse.

So screw eBay. Craigslist hasn't worked for me either. I guess I'll
advertise it on autotrader.com -- $65 for an ad that runs for up to a
year, which is cheaper than eBay. Or I'll just buy a car cover for it
and keep it so the mice have a place to live in the winter, and add
it to my list of projects.

Re: [MBZ] I am NEVER selling on ebay again

2009-11-22 Thread Jim Cathey

Your 'vote', such as it is, is many times more effective if accompanied
by a well-written (firm, but polite) complaint to the management
explaining your position. Best, of course, is rather than say 'never'
you say 'not so long as...', or some such. Tell them what you'd
require in order to be their customer again. Keep it real, there's
no avoiding the shills, but the fact that your side is un-presentable
is your real complaint. Oh, and Paypal required in order to do business
through them, that's not so cool either.

eBay is opening up opportunities for competition. Don't know that's
what they had in mind, but that'll be the effect!

There is a place called ioffer.com.Ubid.com has been around for a
long time. I think it was started by the macmall/pcmall folks, or
somebody they knew. Ubid has listings for used cars, but I don't think
there is a category for parts. It caters more toward consumer electronics.

I listed a tractor on ubid, and got a few lowball (ridiculous) offers.
I sold it by a targeted email on the uppermidwest Organic fruitgrowers

I believe the market is overripe for some serious competition to the Bay

Ebay has on and will never have any REAL competition because they are just
so damned good from a bidder's perspective. I love the thrill of sniping in
my winning bid at the end of a hot auction.

There may not be
enough interest in any particular part to get an acceptable price by
bidding. In this case a fixed price (maybe with a option to make a
lower offer but this would not be binding on the seller to accept) might
be better.

Re: [MBZ] I am NEVER selling on ebay again

2009-11-22 Thread Dieselhead
Those are good points. For most parts, I think a buy it now of best
offer format is good for parts. I don't look for stuff without a need,
and most of the time, if I have stuff to sell, I can wait for the right
price. But there are times when I like the auction format because in
the end at a real auction, the item is sold. An auction can help
establish prices if you are not sure of the value, or have something
rare. Like a M100 chrome plated muffler bearing.

I think Andrew was being tongue in cheek about loving fleabay. I like
the snipe option, but Allen's flexible ending is more realistic to get a
true market price. That is a way you could give the bay area snobs some
real competition. (along with treating buyers and sellers fairly.)

(sorry I don't mean to offend list members in the Bay area, but fleabay
in the beginning was very snobbish about being for those in the bay
area. They got over that quickly when they learned how to monetize
fleabay. But the fleabay people are still arrogant in my opinion, and
that is close to snobish, so, to me, they are snobs.)
