Sorry it took me so long to follow the link and see the photos - the 1st photo that appears is an incredible view of what the men faced once the big door was dropped - it looks like the German positions are a mile away - it's amazing that *any* men made it across all that open land! While the smoke probably helped the men avoid some enemy fire it also made it tougher for the Navy ships to use their guns against the pillboxes - destroyers finally closed near the beach and risked grounding to allow them to fire nearly pointblank into the pilboxes. Surviving Germans said they had no chance against that firepower - the pillboxes were designed to withstnd bombing attacks and land attacks but having a 5 gun firing firectly into the slits gave them *no* chance. Thanks to the destroyers many enemy positions were destroyed allowing the ground pounders to advance. Re: [MBZ] June 6, 1944
One of my brother's men on Omaha beach, seventeen-year-old US Navy Seaman Bob Guere, in less than 30 minutes after he had been drafted into the infantry by an Army colonel on the beach, single-handedly destroyed one of those pillboxes by crawling on his belly to directly beneath one of the gun slits and tossing an explosive satchel through it. For his actions, he was awarded the Silver Star. At the end of my interview with him on Sep 11, '01, (yes, the day of the WTC destruction) he reached into his shirt pocket and pulled out a photo while saying, Here I am standing in front of that same pillbox on Jun 6 of this year. I had the very distinct honor and pleasure of interviewing several of my brother's men and several of the equally brave Coasties who delivered them to the beach on that fateful day of June 6, 1944, the memory of which should make all Americans, British, Canadians and other allies stand tall with pride. I was also highly honored and deeply humbled to present the Presidential Unit Citation to members of the unit, 6th Naval Beach Battalion, who had not yet received it - 57 years overdue. I was ten years old when those brave men stormed that beach. I'm appalled that it took 57 years and a 67-year-old RETIRED officer of the US Air Force to officially tell them, Thank you. Still and forever humbled, Wilton - Original Message - From: LarryT [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Sent: Saturday, June 21, 2008 11:59 AM Subject: Re: [MBZ] June 6, 1944 Sorry it took me so long to follow the link and see the photos - the 1st photo that appears is an incredible view of what the men faced once the big door was dropped - it looks like the German positions are a mile away - it's amazing that *any* men made it across all that open land! Re: [MBZ] June 6, 1944
Another branch that gets little credit is the Merchant Marine. I need to check but I seem to recal hearing they lost more men to enemy action than any other. Some men were torpedoed and rescued by another ship in the convoy only to be sunk again - some men were sunk as many as 3 times in one voyage! Most of the ships were without much to shoot back with - and the Germans used long distance airplaces to bomb the ships. All those ships in the water off Normandy are part merchant ships and part warships - and the Germans were targeting the merchant ships as well as the warships. IIRC the Merchant Marine veterans had trouble taking advantage of the benefits promised to the other services. Eventually they were successful I believe.. The Navy beach battalions have gotten little credit, either, 'til very recently. I realize now that the men we occasionally see in photos and movies wearing helmets with an arc painted across the front were my brother's men - US Navy. We usually see them helping wounded, driving bulldozers, etc. Beach battalions were composed of many specialties, including, demolition, signalmen, riflemen, medics and others - whatever necessary to manage the beach. An overwhelming majority. I am sorry for ranting -- we sort of get left out of the reporting of what happened that historical day. And to be honest, the Coasties who survived the drop-off went back to the mother-ship, grabbed a cup of coffee, took a shower, and *then* reflected on what had happened -- and most likely had to run for an extended time in the head. (For you non-sailors, the head is the toilet.) Actually, I think he overwhelming majority (approaching 100%) of the folks driving the landing vehicles were USCG. After all, it was supposed to be shallow water! :-) I will have to research that. On Sat, Jun 7, 2008 at 9:59 PM, Wilton Strickland [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: US Navy and US Coast Guard. My brother, Lewis, then 21 and with 3 1/2 yrs in the Navy, was the senior NCO/leader of a 48-man platoon of the 6th Naval Beach Battalion that went ashore at Omaha Beach at 0730 on the 6th to clear obstacles, secure the beach and control sea traffic/landing craft to and from the beach. Yeah, I know, initial landing was at 0630, but the Navy beach battalions landed at 0730 - still a very rough time on the beach 'til about 1300/1 PM. The Navy beach battalions wore Army uniforms and trained with the Army for the invasion. On the beach, coupla my brother's men were commandeered by an Army colonel - 'hard for the 17-year-olds to argue with 'em when bullets were flying, and the colonel was ordering his men to advance from behind the dunes. The young sailors tried to protest with, B-b-but, Sir, I'm in the Navy, I'm supposed to stay on the beach! Colonel's response was, The Hell you say! Everybody's gonna advance! That means you, too! You get your ass off this beach!! In less than an hour, one of the young little sailors, suddenly drafted into the infantry, had won a Silver Star by single-handedly destroying a German pillbox. Coupla days later, Army Captain asked the sailors, Who are you? They told the Capt they were in the Navy and supposed to be on the beach. Capt sent 'em back to the beach. My brother was surprised and glad to see them - thought they'd been killed. I was 11 when another brother, Carson, rode a halftrack into Germany in '45, about the same time Lewis, as Chief-of-the-Boat delivered troops, supplies during the invasion of Okinawa. (Okinawa, is that spelled right? 'Doesn't look right.) There's no way that we can ever thank that finest of generations for saving the world from Hitler and Tojo and their henchmen. Re: [MBZ] June 6, 1944
Getting those sailors off the beach probably saved their lives - the beach was a killing field. To think of what all those *teenagers* did never fails to amaze me when thinking about it. Many of the kids died without firing a shot while other reacted to life and death situation by being *heros*. I wonder what the world would be like if we were in the same situation today? Fighting Hitler and Tojo at the same time and kids could not volunteer fast enough. In one small town 3 or 4 18 yr olds committed suicide after being refused entry into service - Larry T (66 MGB, 74 911, 91 300D) www.youroil.net for Oil Analysis and Weber Parts Test Results http://members.rennlist.com/oil PORSCHE POSTERS! youroil.net 800-583-8601 Weber Carb Info http://members.rennlist.com/webercarbs - Original Message - From: Wilton Strickland [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: mercedes mercedes@okiebenz.com Sent: Friday, June 06, 2008 10:27 PM Subject: [MBZ] June 6, 1944 I turned 10 four days after my brother, Lewis, and others of that finest of generations stormed onto/into France.
