Re: [MBZ] Lock Cylinder Removal - UPDATE

2007-07-17 Thread Scott Ritchey
Dave,

With the cylinder out, you can work the mechanism with a screwdriver or
similar tool. Make sure the rest of the mechanism works smoothly before
installing the new cylinder. I have had a very sticky mechanism that I
fixed by squirting some lubricant in there with the cylinder removed, but
that may be a bad idea in cold climates.

Went home for lunch in the 82 300SD and farted around with the e320 ignition

again. I found a good picture of the removal tool I need (for around $90) on

the internet, and after looking at it, decided I could make one. I stopped
at the hardware store on the way, and bought a piece of brass sink drain
pipe for $4 and some change to make it.

The ignition cover is basically a circle with a flat spot the tool goes
over, so I took a old PC peripheral blank cover (basically a piece of flat
metal) and ground it a little narrower, bent it over itself on one end, and
hooked it on the drain pipe. Used a clamp strap to secure it to the pipe,
and put it to work. After a little adjusting, I got the ignition out!

In my hands, it looks like all the pins work as they should. There is no way

I would put it back in though, and for $100 Rusty can order me a new one
keyed to my VIN. I'm cheap, but would rather my original keys work then save

$55 for the other one he sells with random key. Looks like I'll drive the
'ol diesel for awhile until the new part arrives.

Thanks again Joe for the PDF's you sent me.

Man if you had cut some sheet metal off an old microwave and secured
it with Shoe Goo you might have been in line for a Cathy award.

[MBZ] Lock Cylinder Removal

2007-07-17 Thread Joe Knight
Flying blind here, Dave, but could that second pdf have anything to do
with it? Not at all sure the transponder coil part of the instruction
applies. What the heck is a 'drive authorization system' anyway?

[MBZ] Lock Cylinder Removal

2007-07-17 Thread Dave Wakin
Thanks to Joe's PDF of the lock cylinder removal process on my 97 e320, I
got a little further then before. I am still unable to get the cylinder out
though.

I have the key in position 1, and made a tool to turn the black cover, but
I can only get it to turn about 45 degrees instead of the 90 needed to
remove it. I put the key in position 2 just to see what would happen, and
the cover turns just as far, so I have a feeling position 1 is not unlocking
something.

Anyone have any ideas?

I also see in the PDF Joe sent me that the say to try lubing the lock
cylinder first - anyone think this might work for me? The no key turning
situation came out of no where, and I use the original keys, not cheap
copies.

Thanks,

Dave Wakin
