The w220 rivals a high end Hyundai in fit, finish and quality. When it was
functional, it was a joy to drive and I was displeased with how it developed a
cascade failure of major systems after a dozen years. Transmission failures,
cats died, Media center kacked, suspension dropped, computers crashed, cluster
(third one, two prior were under warrantee) went blank. By the time I got rid
of it the only thing still working were the tires

W220. The air suspension on this car when it works well gives an amazing ride.
The car handles like it’s on rails which again is amazing for such a large car.
Sam Peterson who was/is (?) on this list has one and I drove it and wow! And he
claims that the air suspension issues are fairly easy to fix when broken and
parts and rebuild kits no longer expensive. The real issue with this chassis is
rust but if kept off salty roads it’s not an issue. People claim that the
interior feels cheap but I can’t really agree with that either.

Kinda, they marketed a few really low end models that were actually rebadged

Yet it seems that they refused to acknowlege that. They never started bringing
over the smaller more economical cars they sell in Europe. I'd have considered
buying an A class diesel with a manual transmission but AFAIK they were never

Now they will be all-electric in a few years, which will keep me in the deep
end of the used car market.

I would also suggest that MB felt a need to be in tune with modern
styling. They no doubt wanted to and felt a need to appeal to the
younger folks.
There is a lot of money invested in vehicles before they hit the
showroom floors and mistakes are very costly.

The Audi 5000 and W124 were very aerodynamic for the 1980s, but the W124
managed to pull it off without looking more aero than the W201.

The W210 had a surprisingly low Cd, at least in sedan form. A big
improvement over the W124 IIRC, but it brought MB into the 'form follows
function' category of styling.
