Thanks again, something to keep in mind for when the 911 goes away. You seem to know a lot about long term storage. Just curious, do they ever put any of those planes out in the Arizona desert back into service, or are they stored more to harvest parts from? Re: [MBZ] Mercedes rust proofing
Dan, My question might be similar to Ed's-I am concerned about the corrosion rust under hood of all of my cars because I live near salt water. I se a lot of white corrosion in the engine compartments, esp. on the aluminum. Fellow RI lister John Peterson uses some kind of marine rust retardant spray on his 300D. All suggestions appreciated, as I need to clean the engines and protect them both summer and winter. Thanks, Dwight Dwight E. Re: [MBZ] Mercedes rust proofing
If you're talking about AMARG, the Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group at Davis Monthan AFB in Arizona. What a wonderful place to wander around in, if you ever get the opportunity. For the most part, the only parts left to the elements are the fuselage and major metal parts, as they will suffer very little corrosion in the dry desert air. Avionics, engines, hydraulics and fuel systems are all removed, disassembled, tested, cleaned and cataloged for future use if they are for an airframe that's still in service. Most of what is there is Vietnam era stuff for the most part. Lots of B-52s, etc., even the occasional surplus rocket from NASA or Vandenburg AFB can be found laying around. I believe there is a museum adjacent to the base that takes tours of the storage area. Dunno myself - the times I was there I was working with the A-10 and EC-130 folks based there.
