Thanks for the feedback, everyone - I'll be seeing about cleaning it up this
weekend.

Mostly just relieved it should be fixable with a little poking around, at
this point.

If you get any brake fluid (and maybe other fluids) into the metal MityVac,
it will corrode to the point the valves don't seal. You can usually fix it
for a while as Bruce describes but it will probably corrode again in a few
weeks. I replaced my metal model with the plastic one for this reason.

Hi, guys.

I'm working on tracking down a severe leak in my door lock system, and I
can't get my [EMAIL PROTECTED] MityVac to seal well enough on the vacuum lines
to hold a
vacuum long enough to test the lines.

(I've confirmed that it's not that every single line in the car is leaking
by testing with a piece of hose and a nice damp thumb - definitely something
in the MityVac itself just sometimes doesn't seal right; I think it's just
that the plug adapters aren't very good sometimes.

Has anyone else had this happen and is it fixable (ie, something I can do to
the plug adapters)?

Or is the MityVac simply broken? (I have the metal one, not the plastic, so
theoretically it could be rebuilt, if it's internal).

Thanks,

Stuart,

I had the same problem with my metal MityVac. There are 2 or 3
rubber valves that can leak due to minute corrosion deposits on
on the housing. It can be fixed by cleaning up the housing
and lubing the flaps. *BEWARE* there are some teeny
tiny rubber parts that will fly out if you are not extremely
careful!

Good Luck,

I have the plastic one but I bet yours is similar in the respect that
sometimes you just suck some junk into it that needs to be cleaned out. They
have, at least mine does, a very simple one way rubber flapper check valve
incorporated into the body of the thing just inside of the inlet port. You
need to take it apart and clean it all up. I believe that I lubed The
piston/bore too. As I recall I used a very thin film of this stuff I got to
lube brake parts, wheel cylinders calipers and the like, during assy. Looks
like it may just be some glycerine based stuff. I bet that Vaseline would
work too.

I built one based on this version. I highly recommend adding the
pressure gauge, and using a sprayer body with a built in pressure
relief valve. It's nice to know how much pressure you're running and
have the ability to release that internal pressure when you've
finished.

Re: [MBZ] MityVac

2005-12-23 Thread Scott Ritchey
I like the one (pressure bleeder) that's advertised in the STAR for about
$40. It's a miniature garden sprayer with a pressure gauge and a screw-cap
on the end of the hose. The screw cap goes on the top of the brake
reservoir. The only thing I don't like about the design is that the cap is
hard mounted to the hose so you need to "unwind" the kinks in the hose as
you screw the cap on the reservoir. The other gotcha is the little rubber
buttons on top of the reservoir. If those buttons are hard or cracked,
they'll let the pressure out ... and a bunch of brake fluid as well.
Recommend replacement if in doubt before pressure bleeding.

When doing vacuum you pump it and it holds vacuum while you have the
handle sqeezed in but releases it when you let go. Wont hold or build
up vacuum. Wonder what the deal is.

Goop in the valves. Likely you can disassemble it and clean it out.
I've had to do this a few times.

It's got rubber flapper valves in it. Easy solution is that there is
foreign matter in a valve. Harder solution requires a repair kit for
$10 or so. Either way, you've got to disassemble the thing.

One of the dual converter pumps that reads both pressure and vacuum is
MOST desirable, but you will seldom need pressure (but when you do it's
wonderful to have that feature). Probably costs a $10-20 premium.

Pep Boys sells them, so did Auto Zone, and MAYBE Harbor Freight.

What you are looking for, and what another MBZ-related list did a group
purchase on, is a device called a 'Suck-Up'. It holds over 2 gallons and
has an elegant pour spout to discard the oil at your local mcparts. Google
"Suck-up, bilge" to get some suppliers. Everyone on the other list has
loved theirs. If you try to make one out of a carboy, you will find that
they are designed to be strong with force pushing out, but are rather
lacking under vacuum. It could be messy. Funny, but messy.
