The 300 block came in my SDL, the 350 head was found on Ebay.

Exactly. His SDL is a 1987 300.
Wilton's is a 350.

Re: [MBZ] More on 350SD

2009-03-25 Thread OK Don
The '86-'87 300SDL with the OM603.961 tends to crack the original head (#14)
if overheaded. I had one with well over 250k miles that was fine.

The '90-'91 350SD and 350SDL have the OM603.97x engine that bends rods, but
has the new head (I forget the number - higher than #17?).

The best combination is a 603.961 engine with the later head from a 603.97x,
or new from Rusty.
I don't think that a car with a known bad engine is worth more than $500
today.

Re: [MBZ] More on 350SD

So what would the numbers be on the offending and acceptable parts?

Here is what

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes-Benz_W126
says
W126.125 1986-1987 300 SDL OM603.961
 3.0L straight-6
 diesel

W126.134 1991 350 SD OM603.97
 3.5L straight-6
 diesel

W126.135 1990-1991 350 SDL OM603.97
 3.5L straight-6
 diesel

I went back and looked at the car, it is in very good shape, 185k on it,
built 12/90. Offered $750, guy says he wants $1k, and if it was him he
would put a new engine in it (he owns a garage, doing that would be no
problem, he probably knows then he would have more in it than it is
worth). We talked about that a bit, he thinks the car minus good engine
is worth $1k because it is in good shape otherwise. I figure by the
time you dick around with the engine, whether a new one entirely or
pulling the head and checking that out, you're into $2k territory, and
no one is buying anything now, so that would be a crapshoot, then if you
gotta do the whole engine transplant... I don't know, I'll think on it
some more. With a good original engine it would be worth a lot more I
would think, but the market as it is...
