[MBZ] No shut-off
So this morning it's zero degrees (F) and when I get to work in my 300D and switch the key "off" the motor keeps running. Had to use the stop lever under the hood to shut it down. I've been having some kind of slow leak somewhere in the door circuits, generally after an hour or so the central unlock does not work. Could something have failed more significantly in the door vacuum elements that would cause the fuel shut-off to fail? Would the cold be a factor? I was hoping to defer working on this until warmer weather but I guess the car had other ideas! [MBZ] no shut-off
I disconnected the "yellow line" and put a golf tee in the vacuum line and now my engine shut-off works again. So that localizes the problem a bit. The "yellow line" is actually two lines that connect to a little plastic pod, which in turn is plumbed into the vacuum tube harness under the hood. I disconnected that entire pod, not just one of the yellow lines. Re: [MBZ] No shut-off
You can postpone the work for awhile if you get 6ft or so of vac line that will fit on the shutoff, run it under the back of the hood to the door and inside, when it is time to shut off the car just suck on it a bit and MAGIC! Is your brake pedal (break petal) hard to push? That signals a bigger vac problem, if it just the shutoff and the locks, then probably either a loose/cracked/off connection or hose, easy to find and fix (there are a bunch of splitter fittings/hoses, those things are not too reliable as they age). Or while you are doing the above you might see the problem. Re: [MBZ] no shut-off
That's a check valve -- you can replace it with a generic Ford part (make sure it's installed the correct direction to hold vacuum in the non-engine side). The yellow line is for the door locks. It goes to a switch in the driver's door operated by the key and to a tank under the front left fender to store enough vacuum to operate the locks four or so times with the engine off. Get a Mitivac, you have a fairly large leak somewhere. I have a Mity-Vac, have to see if it works. The last time I tried to use it it did not seem to pull much of a vacuum, but may have been that it was leaking down faster than I could pump it. Re: [MBZ] no shut-off
Just a note on the vacuum connectors. A coupla months ago I was going crazy trying to figure out what was wrong with Brunnhilde's vac. I have rebuilt the vac pump twice, didn't think it was bad again after maybe 1.5 yr. Did all the door lock checks and all that, but didn't think it could be that bad just with the door locks leaking. Blocked off what I could and kept testing testing. Finally isolated it to the brake booster (after putting on a rebuilt master cylinder, which was a possible failure after I redid the rear axles and calipers). Anyway, I got a used booster, put it on, all was good again. In doing all that though, the main tee between the main vac line, the tap off it that goes to everything else, and the booster, cracked/broke after I was trying to get all that apart to test the booster. And that plastic of the main hoses and the plastic fittings do not want to come apart without surgery. All that pissed me off. Off to Lowes where sorting through all the brass fittings, I got a brass tee and some brass barb fittings of the correct sizes, and put that together and plumbed it in to replace that plastic tee. A much better fix, and looks more Benzy I think. The thing about all that is that there are 2 or 3 different threads and finding the barb threads to match the tee threads of what they had was a time-consuming effort. They have the stuff but it really isn;t well-marked, and is in little poly bags so you have to rip them open to get the parts out to test fit them. Perseverance pays off though, and you end up with a solid fitting there. --R ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
Re: [MBZ] no shut-off
And probably cheaper than what I did when I broke the main tap off the vacuum line, I bought a new main vacuum line. So my main line ought to still be good. Plugging off the door line resolved the shut off problem so that means my slight leak probably gave way to a major leak during our recent zero degree cold snap. I just tested my Mity-Vac, put my finger over the suction fitting and in two pumps the gauge was showing 25" of vacuum. Did not go higher (lower?) with subsequent pumps. Re: [MBZ] no shut-off
Your pump works fine. Check both lines after the "Y" -- the system works vacuum all the time on one side or another of the diaphrams in three doors and the trunk and filler cap, lots of places to leak, but the rubber seals on the vac tank can go, too. If the tank is bad, usually it just need the rubber bits, they rarely crack (although some models have the tank inside the rear bumper, of all places, and it can get whacked). Next place to look is the valve in the driver's door. It goes bad and leaks, or is out of adjustment and leaks. Easy to check, pull the yellow line and see if it holds vac against the check valve. You have to pump a while if the reservoir is attached, though. They pull the yellow with green stripe and yellow with red stripe lines off the valve and see if they hold vac -- if the valve is good, and they leak down fast, one or more of door assemblies (or trunk or filler lock) is leaking. You will then have to pull carpet and side trim to isolate the doors and trunk assemblies -- the lines go across the front of the passenger compartment with a "T" in the driver's kick panel for the left rear door, a "T" behind the passenger side kick panel, and a "T" at the B pillar on the passenger side. Or you can just leave the yellow line fitting plugged and do without vacuum door locks.
