Re: [MBZ] Notes from the field: Stuck rear wheel bearing -- '87
I was travelling when I looked that up on my old laptop in the almost as old MBNA EPC, Casey. Just double checked the WW EPC with the same result though. Clearly states that 124 350 10 32 is the correct part for the 124.092, as it is for the 124.193, left side. The same holds true for 11 32 on the right side. -joe

Re: [MBZ] Notes from the field: Stuck rear wheel bearing -- '87 S124
Can someone with a working EPC double-check to see if the hub/bearing carrier for a 124 wagon is interchangeable for all years? I'm currently at work, and really need to resolve this silly thing. Joe Knight emailed me last week and indicated that it was the same part for all years, but when I called Aurora, they said the part on the '95 E320 wagon in their yard wasn't interchangeable with my '87 300TD. That's also the only 124 wagon they have. This sucks. TIA Casey __ '87 300TD intercooler/propane '94 100CSQ Avant '90 90Q '89 Bluestar
[MBZ] Notes from the field: Stuck rear wheel bearing -- '87 S124
So, I finally decided to break down and attack the wayward rear end in my '87 300TD. I've had a loose rear wheel bearing for nearly as long as I've owned the car, but all the stories of S124 woe and misery kept me from get-n 'r done. I picked up all the necessary links and outboard LCA bushings (which were extra-toast). Turns out I didn't have any suitably sized arbors with which to either press the bearing or LCA bushings, so I opted to take them to the only Mercedes-specialist in the area--Reinhard. Turns out Reinhard's boyz could RR the bushings a-ok, but the bearing was a no-go. They even applied heat while it was on the press--no go. They finally gave up. Now what do I do? The heat destroyed the bearing, so I'm indefinitely immobile. Can I use my oxy/ace torch to cut the sucker out, or what? I may just opt to mail order a good used bearing carrier. Why didn't any of you warn me about this? What's wrong with you people? This sucks. The wine better get here soon...or, maybe it's a scotch night. -- Casey __ '87 300TD intercooler/propane '94 100CSQ Avant '90 90Q '89 Bluestar
Re: [MBZ] Notes from the field: Stuck rear wheel bearing -- '87 S124
I would find another wheel carrier, shouldn't be impossible (try German Potomac). I gave up on a bearing in the steering knuckle of my old Audi Fox, I'd destroyed it and it still wouldn't move. The machine shop I took it to had fits, but did manage to get the old on out and the new one in, it had rusted in place. Peter

The old farmer trick to removing bearings is to hammer and/or cut out everything but the outer race, then run a bunch of heavy beads where the rollers used to sit (same orientation) with the arc welder. This shrinks the metal as the beads cool, pulling it away from the walls of the bearing socket. Then it just taps out. This technique also keeps you from ruining the bearing socket, as you don't end up trying to cut out the race. (Though real studs can do this without making a mess, so I'm told. These are probably the same studs that can weld two beer cans together cleanly.) I have never done this, caveat emptor. -- Jim
Re: [MBZ] Notes from the field: Stuck rear wheel bearing -- '87 S124
You also might try to fracture the race with a cold chisel. Probably easier to get a replacement from a junk yard, though. Peter
Re: [MBZ] Notes from the field: Stuck rear wheel bearing -- '87 S124
They needed a bigger press and an oxy-acetylene torch. I took a ujoint once to a driveshaft place, they beat on it, pressed it, no go. Finally put it on what looked like a 25+ ton press (the hyd cylinder was about 6 diameter) and got out the hot wrench, and had a go. When it popped it sounded like a .45 going off. No damage, no problems. --R Zeitgeist wrote: So, I finally decided to break down and attack the wayward rear end in my '87 300TD. Re: [MBZ] Notes from the field: Stuck rear wheel bearing -- '87 S124
Are you talking about the 300td? if so, those are a bear. My local independent shop got the one changed in my 300TD, but it was a major bear. They bent their tooling, and had to custom build a beefier version. They said iut was the worst thing they'd ever seen. If you can't do any better, I can give you his phone number or address and you could send the carrier to him. No guarantee he can get it out either, but he is good and pretty innovative. Same guy repaired the unrepairable' 126 torsion bar on Dan Weeks car. Loren At 08:31 PM 4/19/2007, you wrote: So, I finally decided to break down and attack the wayward rear end in my '87 300TD. Not if it is a TD wagon. Those are different and very rare. Probably easier to get a replacement from a junk yard, though. Peter Loren Faeth
