We don't have any sidewalks or road surfaces left from that era, the frost has
ripped them all to pieces. That said we do have a lot of buildings and other
structures like dams from them.

Yep. They should still have a WPA going for all the folks who want money but

They probably didn't have enough union concrete* available to meet the

and had to use fresh.

I was not a fan of FDR's job's program, but it beat what we did in
2008-2009 and 2020-2021 by a WIDE margin.

Paying unemployed people to work beats paying them to not work, or
paying failed banks to buy other failed banks because the banks are
already considered too big to fail so it's worth billions to make them
bigger.

Re: [MBZ] O.T. How Soon We Forget

2021-03-07 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
WPA used public funds to produce public projects that made life better for
the nation, while paying a wage [a small one at that] to those who did the
work, at a time when "you could not buy a job" in the words of my Father,
who was a young man during that era.

The guiding principle at that time was "nothing is for free" and "you have
to work for what you earn" not like today with "endless free social
programs that require nothing in return."
Imagine what the inner cities could look like now if the money given out in
welfare over the past 50 years was paid out as wages for public work
projects.

And many of the infrastructure projects people enjoy today that make up our
National Parks wouldn’t exist, either. Trails, roads, overlooks, etc., many of
which were built by the WPA.

Youngest son volunteered with a program called “ACE”
(https://www.usaconservation.org) that provides (free) labor to the National
Parks in some states to maintain and rebuild many of these resources, mainly
trails. He talked about how they saw a lot of markers and related graffiti left
by WPA workers on the projects they worked on. He thought it was pretty cool.

The WPA helped feed my Mom growing up, my Grandpa worked for them doing things
