This is getting way too complicated here..Knurling the valve guides
simply refers to making marks, or gouges on the outside of the guide in
order to make it fit tighter into the head therefore it stays in place and
does not allow oil past. No complicated metalurgy involved.

If you are doing the repairs yourself then the cost to fix the MB is
generally no more than any other vehicle especially considerring the
frequency of needed repairs(on avarage of course) between the two.

I guess if you are paying a mechanic you could be in for trouble but the
"Good ole boys" around here aren't afraid of a Benzjust wrenchin is
all, no matter what you're wrenchin on.

Knurling the valve guides is a used car lot repair. There are some old
arguments about the groves left in the guide from knurling holds more oil
for good lubrication, not in a cast iron guide, knurling fractures the metal
about .005 deep for rapid wear. Silicone bronze guides? Most OE engines that
use bronze guides wear is not a issue. Bottom line don't do it even if you
plan to sell the car.

My bad, in is cutting of groves in something like a metal handle.

http://www.technologystudent.com/equip1/knurl1.htm

As I recall from years gone by, the 3.0L V6 by Mitsu that was used in the
caravan had brass/bronze valve guides and aluminum heads. The valve guides
would come loose from head and start getting oil in cylinders and smoke like
freight trains. The solution was to press out guides, knurl them and press
back in. At least that was what I was told by the machine shop...

Having seen the after effects of the weak valve train of the engine trampas
mentioned, it is not propaganda.

There is a relatively simple fix for the one weak link of the valve train,
though (of course, I can't remember what it is).

True, true. But on the slightly old van you have to either draft
yourself or find an engineer / mechanic to help you move engine
mounts, fabricate parts to connect to existing drive train (unless
you're ripping everything from motor back out and if that's the case,
more mount moves) Plus trying to tell someone who may be working on
the vehicle (Hey, even gear heads feel under the weather and just want
someone else to get dirty every once in a while) why the oil filter
they are trying to put on that "Chevy 3.8 L engine" doesn't fit.

*Anything* is possible, but it may not be entirely probable. I've had
to talk myself out of measuring mount points on Mitsu 3.0 V6 engines
several times. I love those things, and I still say one of these days
one is going into an S10. And a W124. Maybe a BMW 3 Series, Jaguar XJ6
.. bullet proof and strong. But costs and cooler heads prevail and
I have yet to drop one into anything other than a Mitsu.

That set up would be closer to $38k than to get a slightly old van and
drop the engine in.

Would be a GREAT dream considderring the 19 mpg highway my Girlfriends
father gets with his brand new Trailblazer..For the cost in fuel savings
alone maybe you should look into the MBZ based Sprinter lineup.

I need to replace our people mover 1992 Pontiac Transport van. (Only has
178k miles, but it's getting tired for my beleagured wife.) We need
seating for 6 people and it would be nice if it could tow our popup camper
(about 2200 lbs loaded). So we're looking at Chevy Trailblazers, etc. I
got to wondering, how hard would it be to swap out their inline 4.2l 6 and
drop in a 2.7l turbo diesel from MB? I realize this is completely pie in
the sky, but it's a combo that I could live with!

I spoke with a FedEx employee a copuple of weeks ago that was driving a
MB badged Sprinter. She told me she had it and not that Dodge thing
because she was so special. I then told her that the only difference was
the badging.

Apparently it was FedEx that started this whole thing but didn't want to
be seen driving MB's because they would be accused of having too much
money! hahaha

I see at least 10-12 Sprinters a day here in Toronto and as many Smart
cars as well! And the idiots at MBNA thoguht there'd be no market for
them! BAH!

What Jeff said, Buy a Sprinter :) Slightly off topic, I saw a
*Mercedes* Sprinter in Indiana today. Has MB ever sold a properly
badged Sprinter in the NA region? If the guy hadn't been on his way
somewhere (ie filling up, getting out to get lunch, etc) I would have
stopped and asked if he had just bought the proper Euro parts to take
it back to MB badging.

Though it was a work Sprinter, hauling a small trailer, very
short wheel base, no windows in cargo area so for a van that was
obviously for work and not show it doesn't make sense that they would
have gone through the trouble to Euro-ize it.
