That's on my retirement bucket list, campaign some kind of car in some kind
of casual race series. I love the whole concept of Lemons.

No time now but I am so pleased for them. Seriously talented drivers, all
meeting seven years of saturdays working on their 87 325i coupe with many
events and prior race wins, but this is their first regional chumpionship
victory. Two eight hour races at road america over two days. They caned the
field in the wet conditions and won class c and overall by nine laps I
think. They did not open the hood or the toolbox once during the whole
weekend. There were lots of cars there with owners flying drivers in etc.
And professional motorsports teams from LMP etc. Parker comes to mind,
fielded a camaro.

Anyway, the level of competition at the pointy end of chumpcar is very
high. 95% race on reliability. The top 5% race on speed. Lots of industry
professionals putting teams of guys together. Takes a massive effort on car
prep, race management and driving skill to pull off a win like that.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Extinguishing a Tesla bettery fire

2017-10-23 Thread Karl Wittnebel via Mercedes
Drove an x the other day. Over 5000lb and 4 sec 0-60. It is like driving
around in 1st gear with the regen on; slows you right down to 5mph when you
let off the accelerator. Except 1st gear gets you to 155mph. They say they
have serviced cars with 300k miles on original brakes, because people never
use them.

There is no oil in the car, period. You service it annually, to grease the
moving bits.

The autopilot stuff doesn't work in town, eg for pedestrians, but auto
emergency braking does for cars, objects etc.

Some dude stole one and hit a pole at 100mph a few years ago in hollywood;
that car burned also. Or half of it did.

My sister's pontiac t6000 caught on fire on the i90 when she was coming to
my high school graduation. She still has the puddle of aluminum that was
the bumper. They had enough time to get out, pop the hood, look under there
and see some smoke, and by that time it was almost too hot to stand next to
the car. She grabbed her wallet and camera off the dash, and her friend
managed to get the bikes off the roof, but they lost everything else in the
vehicle as it roasted itself to a burned out hulk on the shoulder out by
Wall Drug. Some trucker tried an extinguisher. No chance. Made the local
paper.

Anyway I'm not thinking a tesla is any more burnable than the rest of the
iron rolling around out there. When a car goes up, it is the interior and
rubber that really make the fire. If they could stand next to it long
enough to get the jaws of life out and use them, then Tesla is doing
something very right. I do think a big manual disconnect would be a good
idea, though, just like a regular track car has.

My cousin just won the central region chumpionship yesterday. Need to get
into that. Would run a 124 but I expect it is too heavy. And complicated.
