US NOx emission specs exceed those for Europe (or did)! There's a basic
incompatibility between the two.

Don't forget that the EU and EPA have DIFFERENT WAYS THEY MEASURE EMISSIONS.
The EPA places a much higher emphasis on NOx and particulates than the EU.

As we all know, diesels burning petro diesel are way higher in NOx than their
gasser counterparts. This is why imported diesels (mercedes and otherwise)
are few and far between, and why we go for years without seeing any new
imports.

Or maybe not. I hear the stricter EPA regs that come into effect in
2007 will totally eliminate passenger car diesels, here. (Although the
car companies swore they could never meet the EPA's gasoline engine
regulations, back in the 70s, so who knows?)

A reasonable person would figure the UVW would give a holla' to the the
dealers up north with a request to clear the Vancouver dealers overload
of TDI, thereby allowing VVW to take delivery of new model 06 cars, and
UVW sells the stuff the canadians are not moving. That is just me
thinking logical. I know logic has no place in cars.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Why'd VW Pull the TDI Passat?

2005-08-31 Thread Harry  M.
I'm going to add here that since fuel prices are even higher in europe that the
diesel's popularity is higher there then here. That could explain why it takes
longer to reach us. It will be back just don't exactly know when. Could be that
they have to stock up their market first before they have enough to send here.
The new one will be longer, wider and much faster then the old model. Hate to
say this but they already stated it was quieter then ummm.. should I say this
the C Class :0

Re: [MBZ] OT: Why'd VW Pull the TDI Passat?

2005-08-31 Thread Harry  M.
I have a Passat and according to VW they will be bringing it back with the new
model which is the B6 platform. The new TDI is available in europe now but
won't be here till next year. As far as I know the most recent B5.5 Passat is
still available with the TDI. Actually the TDI was more reliable then the other
gas models.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Why'd VW Pull the TDI Passat?

2005-08-30 Thread Bob Rentfro

I did hear they are 86ing the 4 door Golf TDI for some reason...

Do the '05 TDI engines have timing chains vice belts now? My '01 Beetle TDI
will be due a new belt soon (60K) about the time the lease is up. If they
have chains now, I may bet a new one.

I guess I'm really outta the loop here, I thought they were going to
ramp up tdi sales throughout the model range, given their increasing
popularity. Seems silly to nix the new Passat tdi, which by all
accounts is a stellar vehicle.

This, of course, being a less cynical answer. And to answer Casey's question,
dealers have mentioned it, and it's been the buzz in the TDI community for
a while.

They are classic performers. Underappreciated, for sure. Probably
because they have fields and fields of unsold cars in Mexico now, and
TDI is a niche market. I bet they want to concentrate on getting
inventory down a bit.

Just guessing, though.
