It may depend on who drives the car. I see a large population of 3/5 series BMW at the PNP with no body damage or nasty interior. Very nice car, as nice as a Mercedes, but more expensive to keep rolling down the road. Stock wheels are in a metric size (a brief Michelin experiment that never caught on) for which tires are outrageously expensive. Takeoff 15" or 16" wheels from many later BMWs will fit and are cheap and easy to find, though. The automatic trannies self-destruct if revved in neutral or park (e.g. during an emissions test). The manual is bulletproof. Various plastic bits in the motor dry out over time and fail to do their job of oiling the valvetrain, necessitating a top-end rebuild. Other than that they are extremely long-lived, well-built cars---generally considered the most reliable BMW ever. If it has been taken care of, you will be astounded at the handling and performance---like your old 124, but much more so. Half the mileage, though. Re: [MBZ] OT: looking at a ___
I think they're great cars. I don't own one, but many friends do. I feel they're ever bit as reliable as a benz; those that I know would say even more so, and most of them have owned Mercedes too. The inline 3.5 is great and very smooth. I have a couple of friends with them in both 3 and 5 series with over 250,000 miles with no issues.
