[MBZ] OT - More Vintage Stereo
Saw a pair of Altec Lansing model 9s on the local CL today. Seller wants $225, will probably come down a little. Cabinets are very good, had surrounds professionally done recently. Does this sound like a good deal? Got a pair of Magnepan MG-II speaker s over in Orlando for $249. original owner with docs and boxes. Hmmm. Scored a pair of Magnepan MG-IIb speakers today. Sale on eBay failed because seller would not ship. Knowing what beasts these things are, I contacted the seller and offered them $200 (opening bid on eBay was $250.) Had to drive over to King John's place to get them, but it was the second owner and they had all the original boxes, packing, manuals, etc. Tomorrow I go to look at a Soundcraftsman setup with a 250 watt amp, equalizer and tuner. The guy is a hard core audiophile with all sorts of high end stuff, and is asking $365 for the lot. I am going to go and see if I can get him down to $300-$325, which is about market price. Had to pass on a nice pair of Altec-Lansing Model 9s. They were just professionally redone with new surrounds and are in very good condition. Seller was at $225 for the pair, but got them down to $150. Unfortunately, I have limited funds and would rather have the Soundcraftsman equipment... Re: [MBZ] OT - More Vintage Stereo
Yes, I have. I was suitably impressed, however, it was a temporary setup in my Apartpit and they were more or less in the middle of the room. Not the ideal setup, but enough for me to get a good idea of how they sounded - very, very nice. Imaging was amazing, although they seemed to be very directional, which I sort of expected. The Fisher seemed to handle them well, but it has yet to be tuned and recapped for optimum operation. I was able to score the ones in Orlando for $200. Original owner, original boxes, paperwork, everything. These are a little newer, as they are the MG-2s, mine being MG-1s. So now I have enough Magnepans for surround sound! A friend of mine in college had a quadrophonic system set up in his dorm room, with 4 Heil Air Motion Transformer speakers (large floor-standing square things about 30in tall) in each corner of the room, some sort of high-end turntable, and a big Pioneer quad amp/decoder pushing them. He bought a bunch of vinyl quad records. The equipment mostly filled the room. When he cranked it up it was incredible, though the quad effects seemed mostly minimal, unlike DD5.1 etc. these days. --R On 9/28/11 5:12 PM, Alex Chamberlain wrote: On Sep 28, 2011 1:46 PM, "Dan Penoff" wrote: So now I have enough Magnepans for surround sound! Best friend in high school's dad was a "prosumer" audiophile, and had a quad 8-track setup in their family room. Only quad 8-track we ever found was the Eagles, but I believe his dad had others that were less interesting genres. I can recall listening to "Victim of Love" in quad when we skipped out for lunch and went to his house... True. Amazingly, I have seen a number of quad receivers of various flavors on the local CL. Nothing I would ever touch, but interesting that the stuff is still out there. Re: [MBZ] OT - More Vintage Stereo
This has been the bane of my vintage search. I want to find a fairly high powered (+50W) receiver, but there just hasn't been anything on the market of late. All the late model SS stuff is junk, IMHO, but there just doesn't seem to be anything even remotely old in the market that I can find (and I'm talking local, as I don't want to do the eBay thing.) Just missed a heck of a Marantz power amp the other day. Saw the listing, but it was a really bizarre one, so I skipped over it. Saw it again and realized what they had and called right away. Amp was gone, but the rack mount cassette deck was still for sale. Yuck. And this was one of the old Marantz amps with the big meters and knobs on the front (rack mount, too.) Darn. Magnepans are planar speakers. Flat mylar sheets with magnets and wires glued to them, a very simplistic description. Look like a monolith. The Soundcraftsman stuff is high end audio gear, some of the last made by hand in the US of A before they went out of business. When I sold my house in Indiana my audio gear (relatively late model crap) went with it. I have decided to rebuild my audio system with vintage gear, so I've been trolling CL and other places for the stuff.
