BZT wrong! that is an attempt to be humorous. One u is enough.

Anyhow, in the confines of jolly ol engeland, they have numerous
languages also. queen's, uppity, cockney, BBC, lanc'a'shire,
yorkshire, and undoubetetly many more I've never heard of.

Interestingly, the BBC variant is drifting closer to midwestern
'Merkun Angleish, which is considered to be "without accent"

It once was, but "british" and "ozish" and "newzealish" and
"southafricanish" and the various other derivatives of the Kings English
currently spoken in Britains former colonies are so far removed from the
original that they have difficulty communicating with each other. The only
place left where one can hear the kings english spoken correctly is on
American newscasts, in some American college english departments, and among
us octogenarians who learned it before it was corrupted.

Re: [MBZ] OT - Conceal Carry language

2013-06-09 Thread Rich Thomas
Interestingly enough I have decided that the dialect known as Ebonics is
most likely a descendant of Gullah, which was the language the slaves
sorta cobbled up so that different ones from different tribes could
communicate among themselves and with the whites (who spoke English,
French, Spanish, and whatever else in the early days in the islands and
here in the Lowcountry). It is sort of a Creole kind of thing. My
neighbors speak a very distinctive form of English, which for some is a
second language after Gullah. I have got to the point where I can catch
a good part of what the Gullah speakers are saying when they talk among
themselves, as it incorporates enough English (or American I guess is
more accurate) to be sorta decipherable. Many of the people have that
accent one would associate with Jamaicans.

A good part of the slaves came through this area, and I think this area
was also one of the first for slavery, the local landowners having
brought them up from Barbados and Antigua where they had come from. So
that would sort of explain how the Gullah got spread around.

I have to ask around and see if this hypothesis holds up, maybe check in
with Queen Quet (the Queen of the Gullahs, not Liz).
