destroyed hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of government materials
and equipment. In fact, their purpose was to do exactly that function, and
do it well..

The truly invasive drones operated by government agencies have an
operational service ceiling of 12 to 25,000 feet altitude..

I humbly suggest the net gun would require over large explosive charge to
launch a net to be effective.

Jam it... The source of jamming signal should be easy enough to mask, for a
truly ingenious electronics whizzz child..

I would think the large IQ pool here could come up with a jamming signal
carried by a laser which had a very narrow beam path and would be even more
hard to detect.. click, crash.. done.. Next please..

2015-03-20 Thread OK Don via Mercedes
While it's probably illegal to jam it, these are all operating on public
unlicensed frequencies which have as their stipulation that they must not
cause interference to licensed operations, and must accept any interference
that they encounter. The digital codes that they employ are purposefully
difficult to clone/intercept, so that will be difficult or very expensive
to accomplish, if possible.
However, Curt's low tech idea of netting it is the best, IMHO.
A: - low tech, simple. Think Occam's razor.
B: - the device is not hurt or destroyed, it is now more valuable to you.
At the very least, you can sell it on eBay, but I like the idea of
replacing the receiver with your own. Also think of the Amazon drones (who
just got approval for testing from the FAA) - skeey with prizes. You
wouldn't want to harm your prize would you?
C: - Jamming, a lot of these are programmed to fly home to the point the
flight originated if it looses contact with the controller - if you don't
destroy the whole electronic system, it will just fly away.

The solution is obvious: a l-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-n-g extension cord.
If that can't be found found then a power laser with a feedback loop to keep it
on target; proven technology.

Re: [MBZ] OT - My Drone Buddy Gets into Trouble

2015-03-18 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes
I did a 3 second calculation and ruled it out. I am quick. At least
for copters, they require a lot of power, and the multi-copters have to
be electric. It might work for a blimp/dirigible or a HALE
(high-altitude long endurance) sailplane sort of thing, which this
solar-powered plane sorta is. The main problem is putting humans on
board, they cause all kinds of problems. Remote piloting technology is
getting to where they are fairly unnecessary for a lot of what pilots do
these days, esp on long-endurance or recon missions.

Some years ago a guy I knew had a line on some surplus aircraft from A
Government Agency that he was proposing to outfit with solar panels and
batteries and use them to provide cell phone service in remote areas.
These particular aircraft were HALE soaring planes that flew at 70k+ ft,
above the weather, and a cell site equipment was small and light enough
to fit in the aircraft but the power was the issue, I think he said they
could get about 2 weeks out of the package before it would have to land
and refuel so they would need at least 2 aircraft available in any given
location. I don't know what ever happened to his idea, but I see it
being proposed again now, like 20 years later, for use in Africa and
such places. I think that was going to be his first target market as he
had some experience in telephone stuff, and work with A Government
Agency which gave him some contacts in the gummints there. I think
Google is doing it maybe for internet service and voice too I guess.
The technology of all the bits is likely much better now, would not be a
huge engineering effort.

Especially with 4 motors and a camera.
A former neighbor had an rc plane that ran on a battery and it did ok
but with just one motor and some ability to glide, it would not use as
much power. No camera either.

10 minutes probably feels like a long time when you're doing it. Electric is
difficult for things that fly since batteries are not so energy dense.
You and your solar. I get the feeling you've never worked with solar at all, a
5w solar panel is about 1 foot square and isn't enough power to do squat.

So, how high does your airspace extend? When I'm flying over your house on

Yes.

Government does not ask permission before flying drones to spy on you, it
is only equally fair we citizens would do the same.

Who would you rather be stalked by, an ex girlfriend or a government agency
with unlimited power and an armed drone?

A quick read of the 10th Amendment of the Bill of Rights is suggested.

Sounds like someone complained to the FAA. The commercial angle might just be
an excuse to try and stop him without mentioning the real reasons which could
relate to security of various sorts. A large drone can carry enough explosives
to do serious damage according to one article.
Seems to be lots of government concern about drones in general with several
states enacting laws regulating them.
The government is running tests around the White House and DC trying to find
ways to disrupt their communication and Florida is doing the following:

http://www.bing.com/search?q=drone+laws+florida&qs=AS&sk=AS4&pq=drone+laws&sc=8-10&sp=5&cvid=c5c3a53824b74e74aa438983b6c5a6cf&FORM=QBLH&ghc=1

or search: "drone laws florida"

If he really wanted to test his "drone rights" he could take his drone up north
of Tampa a few miles and take pictures around the large nudist camp, or down to
Boca Grande and take pictures of the Rockefellers and other rich folks around
their enclaves.
Gerry
P.S. The info on his drone that I passed on to friend in Tallahassee was much
appreciated. He is now flying a drone around the area and he sends you his
thanks.

Re: [MBZ] OT - My Drone Buddy Gets into Trouble

2015-03-16 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I can only assume that someone ratted the guy out. I'll say that from my
distant observations (I don't work directly with him, but I know people who do)
that the guy has a reputation for being a dick. This, no doubt, was probably
the motivation for someone ratting on him.

That being said, it's probably prudent just to stand down and leave it at that
rather than poking the bear. While I have no doubt there are plenty of ACLU
and other lawyers who would take this on, pissing off the government is never a
good idea in my book. They tend to make your life miserable for a long, long
time, regardless of the outcome.

I think he said something in one of the many local TV interviews to the effect
that he wasn't doing anything wrong, and would continue to run his drone and
post videos until they came after him.

That's not smart if you ask me, but knowing what I do about him, I'm not
surprised.

And the FAA was alerted to his drone flying how

Seems that someone had to make a call to the FAA to even wake them up to
the use of the drone. Despite our feeling like government is watching our
every move these days, there are many more of "us" than "them" so unless he
ran naked to the FAA with his hair on fire screaming "hijack or bomb" it
seems unlikely that agency even knew his drone flew.

What really happened, before they put the 800 lb gorilla in his mailbox?
